Linksys Router BEFSR11 dies under heavy use [linksys befsr11] [second computer]

Q: I have a BEFSR11 connected to my ADSL modem. Connected to a hub that feeds on a computer and also to another hub via a long cable (100 meters or so). From that hub is another 50 foot cable to a . Yes, I have that much lead into the .

When to the uses a lot of bandwidth, the router will completely die. I can not access it via a web browser to 192.168.1.1. I do not know whether this happens with the first computer because I can not run tests on it.

The only way to get a connection again is to unplug and turn off both the router and modem, turn the modem (wait for connection ), set router. Eventually the router to reconnect. I have PPPoE so it has to do that for me to get a connection.

Can someone help me? This is so frustating – I was just 10k/sec upload and download at maybe 50-100k and it froze. This is the second time today and its happened many times in the past. I upgraded to the latest firmware today and have no idea what else to do.

Re:Hmmm….changing the MTU setting to 1492 fixed the problem that i was having. Thanks guy.

Re:Astaroth: When it goes down I cannot ping the router from any computer. There is actually a 3rd computer that is plugged in to the same hub as the 2nd one. None of the 3 can access the net when it dies.

bwass: I checked the MTU and it is already set to 1492, but how do I check if the network clients are set to this too? The hub closest to computer 2 is only 10mbps so I am limited to that speed. Also, computer 3 is plugged in to that hub and when only computer 1 and 3 are on the network, there are no problems. There are only problems when I introduce computer 2 (I'm a college student and move back/forth a lot).

Adding to that, when computer 2 is at a different location it is also on a network with DSL and a Linksys router, but this is a 4 port one. There is no problem there, but the computer is plugged directly to the router.

I will try to get a different cable for computer 2 and see if that solves the problem.

Re:I'm using the April 2002 version of the Netgear BEFSR firmware without any trouble at 2mbps. You need to make sure that the MaxMTU setting on the router is correct for the type of WAN connection you are using (1492, and NOT!!! the default 1500 when using PPoE), and that each of the network clients are set to that value. If one device, particularly the router, has the wrong value WAN throughput will be dramatically slowed down, and eventually stop because tons of extra small ethernet frames fill up the router buffer waiting to be handled.

Also, make absolutely sure that the cable quality is PERFECT if you are running at 100mbps on your LAN. If they are not, or you are unsure, set up the NIC on the problem PC to run at 10mbps full dulpex, rather than the default setting of auto. This sometimes yields MUCH better results since 10mbps is much less sensitive to cable issues.

Re:guy: You need to determine if the problem is with the router itself, with the cable connection between the router and PC#2, or with PC#2 itself. When the problem is occurring, see if you can ping the router from PC#2 and from PC#1. Try also moving PC#2 temporarily to a location near the router and use a different cable to connect; then see if the problem still occurs.

Re:My BEFSR41 does the same thing. But it's only when i transfer files between the machines on my lan via FTP. If i queue up like 3 or 4 files it will just hang and i have to quit my ftp client all together and log back in again. I think it's either a shoddy cable or maybe older firmware would help this situation.

Re:Do you know where I can get the previous version? I upgraded from about September 2001 to April 2002 or whatever the newest version is. I can only find the newest one on their site.

Re:I had the same problem with my linksys router. I believe that it is firmware dependent. At the time that I had this problem, I was using the latest firmware. Then the router crashed twice under heavy load. I then loaded up a slightly older firmware and now it's rock solid. I would suggest trying out a different firmware version.
