Looking for my old (er) to improve PC build [image editing] [motherboard]

Q: Ok, so I built my computer, probably two years ago, and it was here and there some upgrades done, I fried a that was replaced and upgraded as well. Now I noticed the system slowing down quite a bit, and if Adobe has newer versions of PS, this thing seems to take quite some time to a number of tasks to do. So, I think the upgrade time, but dont do much gaming again.

I either these days, so keep that in mind. 99% of what I do is to edit images (RAW files at 6.2MP) and listenage.

Specs music (as I can remember):
ASUS A8N7X-E Deluxe
400w name brand PS (just dont remember what kind)
512mb DDR
Athlon 333MHz + 2500 977 503 Maxtor ATA133 30GB (main drive, 466mb free)
Western Digital ATA100 40GB (music store, 1.05gb free)
Quantum Fireball 10GB ATA100 (general storage, 1.68gb)
Sony 12×4x24 (again, not 100% sure) CD burner
XP GeForce Pro
nVidia AGP4X 2 MX100 (i think)

My thought was either a massive memory upgrade, or a SATA HD . what would you go with?

Re:A dual core AMD 64 X2 will be a dream for you since you do hefty data processing related stuff… however that will set you back quite a bit, cuz you'll need new mobo, cpu, and prob ram and gpu.

I would recommend you try and OC your current system as much as you can to squeeze out any extra juice at the end of your XP's useful life. The reasoning behind this is that AMD and Intel are both coming out w/ a new lineup of dual core chips/socket pakages starting next spring. If you save up some xtra cash, you can do a totally new upgrade come spring. The newer dual cores might be even better and provide even more performance for you (not that the current AMD 64 X2's aren't good as it is…)

Re:I highly recommend, if investing in a new MB and Chip to go all the way to 939 socket. IMO, 754 isn't worth it (pricewise) if you are already upgrading everything.

Pick up a nf4 MB and a 939 venice and you should be set.

As far as ram is concerned, run anything you have… speed timing improvements are minimal vs. DDR400 and 333.

Re:Ok, so here's what I came up with. I decided to go the A64 route, seeing as it was either goign to be that or going dual processor (AXP DP boards are hard to find these days..)

So, right not i've got 512mb (256×2) of 333mhz ddr in my board. I plan on increasing this to 1.5gb, but should i use the existing DDR333 memory i have now and buy a 1gb stick of 333, or should I get 3×512 DDR400?(thinking extra cost vs performance.. if its REALLY worth it, i'll bite) I'm thinking of using a Chaintech VNF3-250 coupled with an Athlon 64 2800+ retail.

thoughts/comments/opinions?

ps – running 200fsb (2.21ghz) at the moment with no problem. a tad quicker, but now i want an A64 :D

Re:Although the CPU could easily OC to 200 FSB, you still need to upgrade your ram. Your existing ram will prevent you from OC'ing the CPU to its max speed of about 220FSB. Anyways, buy another 512 MB ram PC 3200 at least or faster and the pull out the existing ram and then try OC'ing to 200 FSB. If the system works, swap the rams and see if the ram can take the OC'ing. If it can't, then you could end up buying 2 sticks of 512 MB PC 3200 or better yet get 2 GB.

Edit Your Digital Photos Using Photoshop
Re:More ram will definatly help with photoshop, I would get another 512mb stick. Your CPU should overclock fairly well with so I would try and sqeeze some more out of it. Hard drives aren't too expensive now either, I would replace your main drive with a bigger one, at least 80gb, and get rid of the quantum fireball. Better yet, get a 120 or 160 and get rid of the maxtor or WD as well. If you haven't already, move you page file to either the WD or the Fireball, because 466mb is WAY to small for a page file, especialy with only 512mb of ram, you need to keep more free space on the drive your page file is on, or you'll get some big slow downs.

Re:Yeah, don't get another Athlon XP. Go with an Athlon 64. Windows XP x64 is useless though. It gives no performance benefit, and driver/program support is pretty bad.

Re:well, i could do a $300 upgrade, but it'll either be that or a new camera lens.. I'll go and take a shot at overclocking right now, see what I can get without spending any $$$. Another idea I've had was getting a new dual processor mobo and trying a dual 2500+ setup, but I havnt really looked into that at all. bad idea since XP's are on their way out?

any idea if the x64 version of windows will see that much of a performance increase over 32bit windows? if its a night and day difference, it might just be worth it..

Re:The cheapest path would be to overclock the 2500+ by upping the front side bus to 200MHz and adding another 512MB stick of RAM. Upping the fsb will increase memory speed as well, to pc3200 from pc2700. Those two things will bring the best bang-for-the-buck performance increase.

If you have a few-to-several-hundred dollars to burn, uprgading to a socket 939 Athlon64, say a Venice core 3000+ and the ASRock dual 939 SATA along with another gig of RAM, that's $300.00 or so, and transplanting parts from old rig to the new one( hard drives, PS, OS and disc drives) would yield a nice performance boost. The Venice chips seem to overclock readily. Another $300.00 on a current generation video card is a necessity given your current card.

I just sold a rig very similar to yours and built a new rig very mucjh liek the one that I recommended for you…it smokes. Money well spent.
