Q: I have a system I built myself that running is good for one year, but recently I have some serious problems with it (would not have POST). Ive RMAd the motherboard and processor / heatsink. It is now starting up, but overheated very quickly under no load (I only have a system monitoring tool to open), rising to around 50 C and the closing of a MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION. I am sure that is caused by overheating, but question is why would so rapidly overheating under such a small tax? Here are the specs:
Motherboard: MSI K8N Neo Platinum
Processor: Athlon 64 3400 977 503 PSU: Antec True 380S
GPU: XFX GeForce 6800GT
Memory: 2×512MB Patriot PC3200
Could this a nutritional problem? I can post the values of the utility system if that helps (I do not know what is good / normal for this). Any ideas? I hope to make a run from a computer shop if I can figure out something to buy here to help. Thank you.
Re:The MACHINE_CHECK_EXCEPTION is an indication of bad hardware. I'd go step by step with the RAM, vid card, network card, mobo, replacing them with known good until you don't have the prob anymore.
Re:It may help to test the hardware with available tests. Memory can be tested with memtest and the hard drive can be tested with the drive manufacturer's diagnostic utility.
Memory Tests
Apparently memtest may not work properly on some motherboards, causing test errors when there should not be. If you receive an error with one tester, try another.

Re:I am having the same problem – brand new Athlon XP 3000+ with Biostar N4SLI. (thanks Anandtech Buyers Guide
Every once in a while I will get the "Machine_Check_Exception". I don't think it's heat related, at least not in my situation. – no overclocking, right out of the box.
Re:Thanks for your replies. No, I'm not doing any overclocking on the system, and the heatsink is clean (it's brand new from AMD–warranty replacement). Any other ideas?
Re:There is another recent thread concerning the Machine_check_exception here: BSOD (http://{$MySite}/messageview.aspx?catid=32&threadid=1693499&enterthread=y). Even though that situation did not involve overheating, it may still help to read through it.
Your PSU should be fine since it is an Antec. Concerning the PSU, it may possibly not be powerful enough to handle overclocking and the 6800GT video card.
Maybe your heatsink/fan/cooling fins are extremely dirty, thereby preventing proper heat dissipation.
Re:Are you sure you have the Heatsink installed (making proper contact with the CPU) correctly?
Are you OverClocking?
If not, have you checked the BIOS to see if "Dynamic OverClocking" is not enabled?
