Mandrake 9.1 help – can not install Lyx or Qt [noob] [distro]

Q: To say that I am a lynux is an insult to noobs. I have about 11 hours spent reading the frequently asked questions and seeking help. But now I am stuck .

get Error installing lyx-1.3.3-1mdk91_qt.i586.rpm
“qt = 2.2.1 is needed by lyx-1.3.3-1mdk91_qt.i586″

I did a search in the Mandrake software package installer for everything ” qt. When I attempted to install them soon to “drive 3″ International Drive. None of the three disks in the , I purchased what seems to be looking for her. So I tried to download a current package aborted

I Qt. It is a TAR? file. I read the Install doc, and its waaaay over my head. telling me to create one. profile or. login file and create a bunch of changes as I have or not (which I do not seem to)

So I tried to make a rpm package for Qt to find, unfortunately I can not find one.

This is my first Linux experience and I had done okay, I managed to install nvidia display drivers installed and updated LF2 a read-only view of a dual boot winXP NTFS partition

Anyway . if anyone can help me find a Mandrake rpm package for a recent version of Qt and to help me or complete installation Lyx Id be very grateful. This is a machine for a student friend of mine. I have much more time than the small amount he paid me worth. I thought it would be nice to learn Linux, but Im swamped with work and school now just want this out of my hair.

sorry novel.
TIA for the Big Time!
OM

Re:Older versions of mandrake used QT 2. You probably found and RPM that was made for an older version of mandrake, and the new one is was made for Mandrake 9 or 9.1

Raiding For Noobs
Re:Thanks for the help gents. I actually found another made for mandrake rpm file and inexplicably it worked just fine. So its all good. LyX is pretty cool. I'm likeing Linux as well. I think as I learn about it I might try and dump the mandrake training wheels…

thanks again!!!

Re:see if you can either find a older version of qt or a newer version lyx.

With libraries/dependances like qt you have major and minor revisions. Of course this is all to keep track of new developements in that specific dependancy/library.

Generally packages try to keep backward compatability, but it's not always possible. QT is a good example of this. Qt2.2.1 would probably be compatabile with anything using Qt2.1.1 or Qt2.0.3, but Qt3.x.x is new and may have features or redisigns that are incompatable with the older version.

The rpm package is suppose to be "smart" enough to detect these incompatabilities and not install it.

Now I don't know for a fact that qt2 is incompatable with qt3, but I am pretty sure of it.

edit:
Actually I think that qt2 and qt3 are different enough that they can be installed at the same time. Which is somewhat unusual for libraries, but not unheard of.

Re:Ok, followed the directions here
http://plf.zarb.org/~nanardon/

this told me to run 6 commands as root. Now I have additionals rpm sources in RPMDrake. Now when I run the Lyx package it runs some other depenedencies, but still gets same error.

"the signature of package lyx-… is not correct"
"No GPG signature in package"
"Do you want to install anyway"

to which I say "yes"

Then I get the "conflicts detected" "qt = 2.2.1 needed by lyx…" "Install aborted"

I installed qt 3.2.1 according to the "INSTALL" doc as best I could. It seems to have worked. I can run the demo, played the asteroids game…

Still stuck. Sorry for being such a whiny clueless , but I'm kinda amazed I've even come this far in just linux day 2.

PS does it matter that the install doc had me install qt to /usr/local? Is it possible that when I run the lyx rpm package that it just doesn't "know" that qt is installed???

Thanks…
