Q: Is it possible to map a (not MS) ftp server as a drive in win2k? I ask because it would v.useful access my files on the uni uni servers through explorer with my account as a shared drive on my home machine.
I understand that it is possible to do this with MS based servers according ntfaq. com, but Ive never been able to make it work with my uni server that is linux driven.
If anyone any ideas or suggestions it would be greatly appreciated!
cheers

Best Answer: Follow this step by step procedure. You don't need additional software to make it works.

Re:I had pondered the security implications as well, although like you said I think I will investigate further.
As for the 'cronjob' the main problem is that ive just started a database class on SQL and oracle etc. I dont have any of the databases, oracle or the SQL prog at home so I have to run them remotely from the Uni's sun machines that we can ssh into (they disabled telnet over security issues) i can still get access as if from the sun machine or running it through and xTerm on the win machines in other labs.
cheers for all you help so far everyone

The ntfaq site says the server has to be running both netbeui and tcp/ip, so the next stage may be attempting to persuade the sys admins to enable one or the other (some chance of that happening!) >>
The security implications of this worry me. They may negate the added benefit of "easy" management. If you do a lot of research into this, find out that it can be done, and find out how to do it (not to mention reports on how this does not affect security) you may have a chance of convincing the admin. Going to an overworked admin with no information just a request (or demand depending on your demeanor
) is not a good thing to do.
Also, you could just setup a cronjob to merge the two sets every so often. It shouldnt be too hard to have it merge everynight.
