Q: My Zone Alarm goes nuts for the last hour. It has blocked 35 attempts from the same IP address. I went to ARIN WHOIS and found that IP from AOL. Is this a hack attempt?
Re:Yep, I saved the log in my backups area just in case it becomes a trend. Although I have not noticed any activity since then. Probably just a random port scan.
Re:At least you have the logs of these scans. Just keep them in a safe place until you really need them. I wouldn't bother with attempting to contact ISPs for things like this.
Re:That's great! Maybe hackers are going to start putting those great coasters they get in the mail to work for them. You know the drink coasters that will also get you like 700 free hours of AOL. HA!
Re:I didnt think AOL users knew what an IP was, let alone a port scanner
Re:You can try to report it to AOL but you'll likely hear little to nothing from them about it.
As far as getting offline, you should be fine.
Re:Hmm. I use neither. So should I just get off line for a while. Should I report this to AOL? I guess this is one way to test zonealarm eh?
Re:Its probably someone scanning every port you have to find a vulnerability. So it two words, most likely.
If you're running AOL or AIM on your computer, then it could possibly be something with either of them. However if you don't use either, then the above is likely true. Someone is trying to find a port that they can access.
