Moving Windows 2000 Athlon chipset from VIA to P4 845D. Re-install or restore to detect? [chipset drivers] [yuk]

Q: I have a box running Windows 2000 Pro on my Athlon 133 a VIA chipset. I give this machine my wife and move to a P4 on an 845D chipset. Can I install the VIA drivers and then delete all the hardware and let Win2k restore to detect everything from my P4 chipset, then install the new ? Or do I need a complete re-load in Win2k (). Im sure someone has done something like this on the forums.

Thanks

Re:is there an apps migration tool if you have to reinstall? I will be in the same situation and prefer not to reinstall all the apps.

Re:You'll definately have to reinstall, but you can probably get by without having to do a fresh install. Just reinstall over the old installation.
If you try to boot up without reinstalling, you'll more than likely get an inaccessible_boot_device error, which simply means that 2k can't
access your drives because it doesn't actually redetect hardware until its back up in windows, so it attempts to use the old via
drivers and its a real b*tch trying to get it to work with a new chipset without doing some heavy tweaking of drivers in the recovery
console or by some other method, such as installing the intel drivers before switching boards. Reinstalling is the easiest way.

Re:I think redetcting is a viable option.

If both boards use the same HAL (ACPI or non-ACPI) you really can expect stability.

Just my opinion.

Re:Cool. Thanks everyone for the input. Looks like I will be re-installing tonight.

Here's to hoping the new i845D chipset will be more stable than my old Via 133A!!

Re:I'll toss in a "me too" post… definitely reinstall.

Both ways will work, but you want to make sure it changes all the low level optional code. While redetecting will change things that HAVE to be changed, it wont change the things that work either way: reinstalling from scratch will definitely give you a performace boost , and be more stable.

Re:Different HALS. Don't waste your time with re-detecting. Re-install.

Re:Either way, make thorough backups….

Re:Reinstall, fresh board fresh OS. It is the only way to get stability.

Re:Reinstall definitely prefered.
