MSI pt880 with P4 2.8 chip wont boot [msi pt880 motherboard] [maxtor 160]

Q: Hey I got a new MSI motherboard pt880 p4 2.8 and a new chip. im using everything learned from my old machine. 9800 Pro, 512 pc3200 crucial Maxtor HD and 160. my problem is that everything turns on but it wont boot. the cpu fan and video card fan is running. Even if I have the ram from just beep that long so im thinking its the CPU or motherboard pulling. So I re-HSF and the CPU again and still nothing works. What should I do?

Re:If you can find a site with decent download speed, go get AutoPatcher XP as well; it applies all the post-Service Pack 1 updates and a whole load more goodies in one go without rebooting or having to use Windows Update.

The speed increase that the various registry tweaks apply is quite noticeable, and there's some neat screensavers too.

Re:Simple, you have to format the drive for windows to be able to see it. Go into control panel, open administrative tools, go to computer management, then choose disk management.

Also, I hope you installed service pack 1 and the proper chipset drivers for your motherboard.

Re:Thanks a million John. I finally got it up and running smoothly with this board, However im running my friends p4 2.6 northwood chip. I ll get my chip back tomorrow. Anyways im so greatful to have finally found the live update that msi has. I was ready to trash this mb but now it seems like iit has all these fun features on it. So what I learn from this board is that you must flash the bios and i had a really hard time flashing without the live update by msi. My lesson from this: dont by a prescott chip and this msi board because its going to be a pain in the butt unless they flash all the boards for you. Not worth the trouble imo.

my next step now is trying to install a pci ata raid controller that i bought on ebay. Thanks once again for the help and feel free if you want to the do's and dont's of raid 0. :)

I believe MSI also has an auto update utility, Live update that you can use to flash automatically for you in a windows environment.

Re:400W is more than you need probably. I have 4 HDs 2 DVDs, a power sucking Vid card, USB and partige in a pear tree and I'm fine with power…

I would check the heatsink as suggested earlier.

Memory mismatch will do this too, in some cases.

If you can get to the setup screen then you have past step one…next try to boot from a CD, then HD…see where it starts to freak out…if you have issues when it's booting to HD, then you probably have a bad drive or your IDE cables are wacked.

Re:agreed, 400 should be plenty. I will almost guarantee you that it is not the motherboard causing it to shut down.

Re:400W should be plenty.

Re:i m starting to think that my power supply is too weak. its 400watts max. i also have to double check my heatsink fan tomorrow if its place properly. other then that im ready to rma this board to newegg.

Re:If it is shutting down immediately like that, you need to check your heatsink. It sounds like it is not installed properly.

Re:Opps What happened was that i was messing with the wires and the 12v atx came loose. So im pretty sure my cpu chip is fine. Now i can post and see the msi screen but after 10 seconds it shuts down completely. If i were to turn it on again it will stay on for 2 seconds only? Any help or suggestions?

Re:Well my old pc was a amd so i can t check it so i ll just have to wait til tomorrow and test my cpu on my friends pc. i unplugged all pci cards and nothing is working. gosh i hope its not my cpu. Thanks for the help.

Re:Let me know how it goes.

Re:thanks for the tip i ll try it now.

Re:First, is the computer posting? Boot means that it goes to windows, I am assuming you mean that you see nothing on the screen?

Ok, step one, remove all unnecessary devices (mouse, keyboard, pci cards, usb, etc). Reset the cmos and see if it comes up. If it does not, you have at least narrowed it down to cpu, mb, power supply and vid card. I think it is pretty safe to assume your video card is ok. Have you tried it with your old cpu, if it is a pentium? Have you tried it with only one stick of memory, if you have two?

As for the beeping, do you have a pc speaker installed? (not your normal speakers) You will not hear memory beep codes if you do not have a pcspeaker installed.
