Q: I came across an Athlon (NOTxp) 1.3 GHz with a dragon and nForce2 256 MB DDR 2100 with Windows ME. If I have multiple windows up like Internet Explorer or Word Perfect, he blocks my mouse and keyboard, but still his thing, including the end of a page to download and such. When its finished I can not move until I reboot. What is going on here? Could it be Windows ME by chance? (My first experience with m.e. VAT)
Best Answer: Multiple times, yes. Multiple times in a short time period? You might have a problem. It's a one computer limit, not a one time installation limit. (The activation software – which is running on a server at Microsoft – can tell if you install it on a different computer.)
Re:Unlike XP, ME falls victim to the old shortage of resources. With only 256 MB of RAM, just don't keep more than 1 or 2 programs open. [You can only do one thing at a time anyway.
So, get more RAM if you can – and move to XP.
Re:< will promptly be rid of ME. Am installing xp on it now. will disable eye candy. (also can't understand microsoft making this os)

Re:As the others explained, WinME is a poor multi-tasking platform.
256Mb is adequate for XP as long as you don't install a major code-bloat background app like Norton Internet Security (whopping 120Mb).
Your CPU should also be a minimum of 450 Mhz for XP.
Once you get it installed right click My Computer, select Properties, Advanced tab, Performance "Settings" button, and click the radio button called "Adjust for best performance". That basically disables all the XP eye candy.
I would strongly suggest you do a clean install of XP and not an upgrade if possible. If you choose to do an upgrade I STRONGLY recommend you backup your data or make a Norton Ghost image of your hard drive first. Upgrades can go very badly sometimes. Don't even thing about doing an upgrade unless you know your system is virus and spyware free.
Also be aware that you will need WinXP drives for all your peripherals. Depending how old they are, they may not even support XP. Check the manufacturer's website and do your research first.

256 will be ok for now, memory is really cheap right now so you should pick some up too.
 get rid of ME and use XP – if you turn down the visual settings it should be fine for general use

Re:have extra copy of xp around somewhere, but only 256 ram on this computer. May have to actually spend money on this mess…
Re:Windows ME is the worst possible operating system for you to be using. I would highly suggest upgrading to xp or 2k.
