Music players can not read external HDD [external hd] [external hdd]

Q: Not sure if this is the right forum or not, because Im not sure if it a hardware or software problem.

I have a 120GB firewire HD connected to my PC, I built a few months ago. I keep all my audio files (ripped CDs, downloads, iTunes, etc.) on my and play them through iTunes or Real Player (latest version of each). Everything worked fine until about two weeks ago. Now media player will not play my music. RealPlayer starts properly, then the song starts to skip – plays an ~ 8 sec. loop over and over. iTunes has similar struggle, although it just cr @ ps. In both cases, I end the program through Task Manager. Ive noticed that when this happens, the red access to the light stays on much longer than it should. WMP similar income results.

I my system scans for viruses and adware / spyware, but found none. Even defragged the HD (though it was only 1% fragged). And Ive been able to copy files back and forth between internal and external HDs with no problems. The only problem seems to be playing songs.

Anyone any thoughts?

Re:So I had to reboot for other reasons, and RealPlayer was working fine … for about an hour. Then it went through the same 8-sec. loop problem. This time I captured the error message.

Error signature
szAppName : realplay.exe szAppVer : 6.0.12.1056 szModName : hungapp
szModVer : 0.0.0.0 offset : 00000000

And after clicking for view technical information about the error report, I got this:

Error Report Contents
The following files will be included in this error report:
c:\Documents and Settings\…\Temp\WER4201.dir00\realplay.exe.mdmp
c:\Documents and Settings\…\Temp\WER4201.dir00\appcompat.txt

To add to the mystery — despite the above message, the folders referenced do not exist on my system, nor do the files as named.

It appears to be a streaming issue. Can you stream a video file from the using WMP?

Just tried that. Seems to be working fine — no skips, loops or crashes.

That sounds really odd.

So you don't have any problems transfering data files to and from the external drive (does it seem slow?)
It is odd. No problems transferring data – just tested transferring 100MB both ways, and each time it only took 4 sec. I don't think it is a 'universal' read or write problem. But for some reason, the media players just lock up.
