My 800th post – I'm totally addicted to UT2004's Onslaught. [dawn of man] [game modes]

Q: Well, I wanted to do something special for my 800th post-semi. Instead, I have another unnecessary “UT2004 made Awesome !” wire. But hey, whatever. Onslaught is the most evil thing created since the . I can not believe I won that stupid game to play for the last 6 hours long. I swear to God, Epic really nailed with Onslaught. I have not even touched the other .

It s 6:30. I have to go to sleep, so I can reach some tomorrow.

Re:Haha, I've been playing assault versus the bots. Lots of fun! Even though my team sucks, so I am usually single handedly getting all the objectives. I think in the long run this will help me learn the maps better.

Re:i used to think so too. on the demo, the majority of the time i played the onslaught map, and occasionally the assualt map. now that i have the full game, i play mostly assault maps rather than onslaught.

i think the prob with some of the onslaught maps are that they have too many nodes. like the one in the winter setting, it has like 10+ nodes i believe. this is good if you have like a 32 player server, but if you play with 31 other people, its severely lags. i found out that 16 people max is the highest a server can support before it starts to lag like crazy. so for 8 people per team, 10 nodes+ total is just too much.

there is a much higher learning curve for assault maps as well. for onslaught, once you know the concept, you pretty much understand it all. but for assault, all the maps are so unique, that it takes a while to fully grasp what the heck you are supposed to do.

Re:Yes Onslaught is the freakin' best part of that game.

I absolutely love it, once you get 20 people on a server it can be absolute bedlam.

Love the levaithon, you can pile 5 people into it, 4 on 4 turrents and 1 person to control it and shoot the rocket launchers (6 launchers, heat seaking and they fire continously). It just plows thru the battle feild, almost unstoppable.

It reminds me of the elephant things at the battle of the "return of the kings". I mean your just grounding away other players and vehicles till you die a death of a hundred thousand cuts.

The cool thing is that it can be "deployed" with stabilisers and such, like a gigantic construction crane if you ever seen one up close. They have 4 hydrolic pads that flip out and lift the entire 3billion ton vechicle in the air and then it transforms to get this super cannon. It can take out anything and everything within a couple hundred yards of the blast zone.

I played single player for a bit, but now I have no desire to play anything other then onslaught.

PS. Playing against the bots, isn't much fun, they have no personalities and have 100% knowledge of were everything is at and will kick even good player's butts. The combination of the "fog of war" and "taking it personally" is cool. Nobody realy has a good idea of what is going on and everybody has their own stategy. It's more like a combination of a chessgame and Doom-style play.

Re:Just a shame bombing run still sucks (with bots at least). Just played for absolutely ages on skilled in the ladder, and not a single point was scored by either team (2nd BR map). I have over 150 kills and 300 points.

Means I can't unlock Onslaught or Assault :(

Can't wait to get broadband and finally be able to play ONS against real people.

Re:It's generally a 'to each his own' sort of thing. The latest generation of actual war based games are cool, with a bit of history thrown in. A slower pace generally… But, if you like the high energy, arm starts twitchin', adrenaline rush then UT2k4 may be for you. And there are actual team tactics this time around…
Onslaught is addicting no doubt… Assault looks very cool too but I've been too busy with ONS…

The thing that is funny is that ONS is so good and addictive that it takes away from the many other gametypes! Sad but true… And there is a certain learning curve that must be overcome… I've seen a number of posts over at the Atari forums that start like this… "Hi, I just bought this game and it's really cool… but this is my first FPS and I have a couple of questions…. and/or this game is hard!!!"

And, IMHO, the best ONS map would be Frostbite… small and sooooo much fun!

Ill have to check it out…. but if the Demo is anything to go by, its nothing special.

Play an Onslaught level with tons of people (at least 20) and you'll see what we mean. It gets insane and incredibly awesome.

Played on a 20+ player server on the Demo. If little improved in the full game then its nothing special….

I still prefer C&C Renegade by a long shot.

Don't get me wrong, UT2K4 is a great game, but it just didn't keep my interest. I sold mine on the FS/FT forum yesterday, and it's back to COD and BF1942 for me. :)

I assume its MP with COD your talking about. Although the SP of COD was great, I doubt I'll go through it again. I haven't played much MP of COD. I'll have to check it out.

I agree, Onslaught is pretty fun.

Yeah, it's MP part. I've had COD since November and I've yet to finish the SP campaign. Granted, COD MP has turned into a SMG (machine gun) fest, but the feel and gameplay just appeal to me.

Re:My first hour of playing Onslaught against bots has been fun, but so far I'm pretty bad at it.

Oh well, more practice will hopefully bring me up to mostly harmless.

Re:The comeback. There's nothing sweeter than having the entire map owned by the other team and coming backing. And obviously the worst is having the reverse happen to you. Talk about highs and lows.
