Half a tube?

Haha :)

That's a little bit too much.

Hopefully you didn't do something like this (http://www.ttecx.de/hardwarereports/52_water_chipset_heatsinks/img/logo/cpu.jpg), and just caked it on there. It should just be a very thing layer, similar to this. (http://arcticsilver.com/images/as2spread.jpg)

haha

Re:yeah, it's not peanut butter. You only need like a rice grain size of thermal paste. A small tube of Arctic Silver 5 should last you plenty of installations. With the heatspreaders on Athlon 64's and P4's, you can just stick a grain size in the centre and throw the heatsink on top. Let the heatsink spread it out for you. Though, some ppl still prefer using the the old "spread it with a razor" job.

No thermal paste is bad. Too little thermal paste is better than too much thermal paste though.

Re:I've seen cakes with a worse frosting job than that. too funny and he didn't even get any on the die!!!

Re:I suggest you reinstall it yourself. Hope your case has a removeable mainboard tray.

Re:I think you have used way too much paste. You are not the only one to do this. Paste should only be applied using a thin layer to fill in any gaps between the heatsink and the cpu. I am running a 3500 winchester @ 2640 (11 x 240 @ 1.5v) and I idle at 30 hitting a peak of 44 under heavy load (hl2 for a few hours), granted I am using arctic silver 5 but the difference would not be that much. Try scraping the paste along the surface of the cpu using something plastic. Also when the heatsink is installed rotate the heatsink a few degrees clockwise and anti clockwise to make sure that the paste has not formed "lumps"

Hope this fares you well :)
