Need help – new computer installation problems [thinking man] [computer installation]

Best Answer: It means that whoever set up your computer and/or network limited your ability to install software. If you are on a personal computer that is not connected to a company network try logging out of your computer then logging in with the username of Administrator and no password. If this doesn't work (password error) or you are on a company computer, you need to contact whoever set up the computer and/or network or your I.T. support staff.

Re:The partition sizes shouldn't be an issue.

Regardless of the performance hit, dropping down to 512 (or less) for the sake of troubleshooting might help you figure out what the problem is. You don't -have- to stay with that amount of memory.

As far as dropping the cash for 2k or XP, you might consider trying to get a full or partial trade in the FS/FT forum. That extra memory you have is nothing without 2k, XP, or some other OS.

Re:The partition size is actually split like 20% to 80%, the latter being the extended partition.

Hmm… maybe I'll just go with WinXP. Thing is, it's a huge chunk of change, and I was hoping win98 will tide me over until we buy WinXP or a cheap new computer (and swap the OS).

I'll try swapping the mem from slot 1, 3 to 2, 3, and maybe taking one out. Doesn't the nforce mobo see a drastic performance drop when not running in dual channel?

Re:Both win2000 and XP are just fine with driver support as far as I'm concerned. The big hullaballo is years old.

I had a triple boot for awhile, 98/2000/XP, thinking that I would need 98 for gaming. Every game I purchased ran just fine in XP. In the year or two I had that setup, I had zero reason to boot to 98. Now I've just got XP and waiting on installing a linux partition.

So you're saying you -do- have a gig of memory installed? Try things with less/different memory and see what all goes haywire, if anything.

What's the partition setup (size and what not) that you're using?

Re:I think my PSU is an Enermax 350W… it shouldn't be a problem, as it is the same PSU as my old rig.

Hosenfeffer: I didn't do anything before the flash other than fdisk and format. It seemed to have flashed alright, and the bios is detecting everything alright I think.

guy: Does that mean I can't do a dual boot? I was going to dual boot win98 and winXP for gaming purposes.

Oh yeah, I remember vaguely long ago that having the primary DOS partition smaller than the extended is a big no-no. Was that for Win98 or 95? Or something completely different? How does Win2000 fare in terms of driver support? I remember a big hullabaloo about them not supporting a lot of stuff initially.

Thanks guys.

Re:For starters, if you mean that you have 2 x 512MB memory modules for a total of 1024MB, then that's got a big red bullseye on it. Win9x doesn't want more than 512MB. I would also suggest just switching to Win2000 or WinXP regardless, because they will make effective use of that 1GB of RAM.

Secondly, you may want to manually extract the contents of the nVidia Unified Driver Package to a folder and then manually install the drivers by going into Device Manager and updating each item that's marked with a yellow !. That's the recommended method. Use WinZip or a similar program to extract the contents of the UDP.

A Thinking Hitter
Re:A) was it necessary to flash the mobo and did you try things before the flash?

B) If you've got other memory handy, go with some other stuff. Likewise with HD. I more elements you can take out of the picture, the better.

C) I'd recommend keeping a log of any errors that show up.

D) You could always check with the manufacturers. Give them your symptoms and see if they'll RMA.

E) At least part of the issue seems to lie with turning off nForce control, so maybe start there. See if you can find other people that have experienced similar schtuff.

Re:Yikes, what a mess. Are you trying to load 98 or 98SE? What is your power supply (manufacturer and power rating)?
