need help optimizing my new system [duron processors] [enlight 7237]

Q: Im putting together my first fininsh system.

MSI Pro2-A
Duron 700
maxtor 20g 7200rpm
Viking 128mb cd pc100
45x rom
teac floppy
case
Windows 98 first edition

Now I need help, optimize my system. If you could help me the way to the appropriate software or websites that would help me achieve this. I thought about overclocking, but I hear a lot of people baking their trying this. I will postpone that until I build more confidence. Any help is greatly appreciated. Another thing is the software that comes with my MSI Pro 2-a board for overclocking is safe with out connecting the bridges on the CPU, or is it pointless to try. Im afraid I will do something wrong.

Thanks

Re:If you don't do the pencil trick all you can really accomplish in SoftMenu is an increase in FSB. I think the maximum people of achieved with that is something like 10 or 12. Taking 12 as a realistic (optomistic) number, you'll overclock to 840MHz (112 x 7.5). Also consider that increasing the FSB stresses the rest of your components, i.e., video card, hard drive, etc.

You get your greatest overclocking gains by increasing the clock multiplier. Connecting the L1 bridges (with a pencil, conductive pen, Loctite, etc.) is required in order to do that.

Re:Using Softmenu III on abit Kt-7, can you overclock about without the pen trick then?

Could I run my duron 750mhz @ 850?, without penning it.

Cheers

Re:guy…..hehe:):) funny bud,

But it is true, kinda like showing your profile if you want to buy/sell here at Anands, you HAVE to OC or leave;)

OCing a Duron is really not that difficult pal! even without the pencil trick, they do much higher than their rated speeds…;)

My advice, get a decent HSF (GW FOP32, or Gorb…) for it for any future OCing you may try.

Re:guy: Since you're using Win98 sansSE you should use Windows Update to get your OS as current as possible. That will go a long way toward optimizing your system. It's also a good idea to go to different manufacturer's sites, (your video card, sound card, etc.) and make sure you have the latest drivers.

Along with the site guy suggested, check out OCTools. (http://www.octools.com/) You'll find lots of helpful tweaks and utilities available for download.

Finally, I believe that in order to remain a member in good standing here at AnandTech it's a requirement that you overclock your system. (j/k)

Seriously though, the Duron 700 is a great overclocker. (Mine runs stable at 1083MHz.) When you're ready to go for it there are plenty of people here who will help you avoid frying your CPU. In the meantime, lurk in the Cases & Cooling Forum.
