Need help – Spybot has taken over my PC! [anandtech forums] [privacy settings]

Q: As I read about problems with Ad-Aware not updated, etc, I downloaded and installed Spybot Search Destroy u0026. I used it a few times this week. Besides finding a real Pita, now Im having trouble logging in to various websites, including AnandTech forum. My computer seems to be rejecting any and all cookies, even though I have in IE to prompt for all cookies, and cookies are allowed in the list.

I have tried all day to log on Yahoo! In order to check my email. It says my browser is rejecting cookies. How is this possible? Has anyone else had experience with SSD?

TIA.

Best Answer: download two programs

adaware

ccleaner

install and run these programs.

Re:I have used spybot and it is great for removing cookies. Yes you may have problem with some sites but then just keep the at minimum(not at prompt, because many sites do not connect at this ie setting) for those sites.

Re:Now Kazaa isn't working, either, so I may have bigger problems. Something has completely screwed with settings all over my PC. Going to cut my losses and start fresh later this week. Just have to back the tons of .shn and .wav files I was working on to CD.

Re:err, wtf?

i use SB S&D, no such problems. No website problems, no trillian problems… but then i dont tell it to delete anything other than what it selects to delete by default, or when i know what it is.

Dont delete when you dont know what it is. Wouldnt do it in Explorer, no reason to start in any other app.

Re:I like to use sandra when I first build a system. It is just a testosterone thing. ;) Anyhow I used adaware and sandra won't work anymore. :| The thing that really gets me is when you remove sandra it leaves the crapware that it installs.

Oh, and what originally tipped me off to the problem was the Trillian would no longer run

I have left those proggies alone up until about a week ago I installed kaza lite. I ran ad aware right after install no crapware installed.

Re:The problem is, I *want* the cookies. IE lets me pick and choose which cookies I accept, and that works perfectly for me. And I did except the cookies in the program. It didn't delete those. Somehow, though, it won't let them be accessed. It did ask if I wanted to accept a new one. I hope I don't have to wipe out all the cookies I have on my system, cuz I can't remember my password to some of the sites I visit irregularly.

A big thumbs down for Spybot S&D here. It's worse than the company it thinks it's protecting me from – Microsoft.

edit
Oh, and what originally tipped me off to the problem was the Trillian would no longer run – the details in the Microsoft report error feature mentioned yahoo.dll, so that's when I tried their web site and found the whole cookie problem.

Now I can't even reinstall Trillian. Anyone know of a situation with that that might be unrelated?

Thanks. If and when I can fix this mess (I'm thinking of just reinstalling right now), I'll go back to Ad-Aware. It never changed registry settings on me.

Actually, Ad-Aware can delete registry settings just like SpyBot does. You have to be carefuly with SpyBot when "Fixing Selected Items" it hit. Just do the cookies and reg. files.

Re:I have not used spybot so no help here.

I just wanted to point out that a new version of ad aware was released this past week. It was posted to the hot deals and software forums if I remember correctly.
