Need help with a word on a 98SE machine dell [dell machine] [initial screen]

Q: These guys Dell computer does not seem to want to run Word 2000. He has Windows 98SE. Word just hangs when it gets to the home screen, but stops and exits your computer. I wanted to try to resolve the problem without reformatting and reinstalling Windows. Heres what I tried:

1. Reinstalling Works Suite (including word)
2. Opening in Safe Mode
3. Windows Update (He is up to date) 9,775,034. Have a Dell recovery, but not the one who formats the hard drive.
** When I tried to restore Dell w / oa word format is opened and worked fine. I thought everything was at that time, so I then AOL opened for him (he uses it in cordination with its broadband service) then we tried opening a saved Word documents on a disk and thats when Word again suspended freezing the entire computer. **
5. When I try a scandisk just keeps restarting on me.

The only other thing I can think of is to redo using the Dell recovery CD and start again from scratch. AOL has been the favorites stored on their end or are they stored somewhere in his computer? If so, where it is stored, so I can display anything AOL related? He uses the book and everything to do with AOL. He loves the AOL interface (Go figure), but does not use the AOL service. Please someone offer a kind suggestion. Thank you!

Stu
Sorry for the long post.

Re:you may have to copy/paste manualy to save it aol sucks thats for sure might email their tech support or look online at oal.com under changing to a new computer how do i transfer stuff?
if the guy is a subscriber then im sure aol stores his config online but as he is not a subscriber i would just copy the entire aol directory to a cd and try to use that as a restore medium
good luck and be as pateint as you can

Re:I hate aol I just am not sure where to find his address book and such.

Re:you might try to do a backup of his files and settings and then reformat and reinstall windows. with aol installed you may be forces to find the address book etc and manualy copy these and other settings to a cd or floppy. im not sure though as i have religously stayed away from aol
good luck
