Need help with Samba + encrypted passwords [cleartext passwords] [registry hack]

Q: I have the following problem – “incorrect user or password”
Redhat 8.0 + Win2000

In my smb.conf file – encrypted password = Yes

I have the passwd file on the right location
I have the same username and password for Linux Box – Win2000 box and I use clear text passwords Samba

When everything works (I used the win2000 + change the smb.conf file)

when I ensure that encrypted password to something else to change the smb.conf file?

any ideas?

UPDATE: When I set the security level to “share” set it works. The setting “user” it does not.

Re:update

It does not work anymore for my XP box (it stopped working after a reboot). Only the w2k box is functioning properly.

Re:I tried my Xp box and Win2k box and it works

Thx

Re:That's Windows, it already connected as something else. Try logging off or rebooting, it's a real pain to switch credentials because of the way MS cache's passwords.

Re:OK — I set the security settings back to "user"
I deleted the smbpasswd file.

I created a new user with smbpasswd -a username password.

This user also exist on the Linux box and the Win2k box

When I try to log in I have now another error

"the credentials supplied conflict with an existing set of credentials"

Re:You need to create an encrypted password entry for each user, the NTLM hash used for SMB is very different from the MD5 hash used on most Linux distributions. Run 'smbpasswd -a username' and it should work.
