Looks great, but try to ditch the Rosewill PSU… They aren't that good… Exchange it for a Fortron AX450-PN… They cost $ 49.99, have dual 12V rails, 36A on those I believe, PCIe and SATA connectors etc… They are very stable and silent…

The rest looks about right to me, but if you could expand your budget just a little more, I'd look for 2 gigs of RAM… Planning on using SLI?

EDIT: BTW, taking a somewhat "lesser" sound system and a cheaper case, will give you the extra 100 bucks for a dual core CPU… After all, they're the future…

Re:I doubt we will be doing very much overclocking on this rig. The Dual core opteron sounds great but I heard the 3700+ single core can still outperform it in games. How much % performance increase could I expect for $100? If it is a 5% diffrence I dont think it would be worth it.

Thanks for the advice guys, I will be buying a Fortron as recommended. So do you guys think this is about as good as it gets for the price? Or is the Dual core CPU's worth the extra cash?

They are worth it. Also, you might want to check out an Opty 165, they are now under $300 and OC very well.

Ditch the Rosewill PSU, they are lower quality, and your PSU powers everything in your PC..don't skimp on the power supply. You can get a 450w Fortron for that price, and it's much higher quality. I got my NEC 3550A on newegg for like $10 less than what you are paying.

Don't think that's true, but I could be mistaken… Where did you read that?

Check page 3 of this (http://www.home2000.net/client/fspgroupusacom/images/AX450-PN%20(9PA4002102)%20SPEC.pdf)… There are some restrictions, but they don't mention it having a combined output of "only" 29A on the dual 12V rails…

You're looking in the right place. The 12V rails have a total max wattage of 348W.

348W / 12V = 29A.

29A is fine for most rigs anyway. I just purchased this particular PSU myself (I'm not running SLI or anything real intense though).

That PSU has 18A on each 12V rail but I remember reading it's 29A combined.

Re:Looks pretty good, but don't go with SLI it's a waste!!!

I would most definately switch that PSU for something better, go with a Seasonic or Fortron 500w. The PSU is not an area you want to skimp on.

Re:Apart from the free Quake 4 then, it's still a good comp… :P You can even get yourself slightly faster RAM… DDR 400 RAM with a CL of 2.5 can be had for some 160 – 170 bucks, but to be honest, that's not really going to make the difference…

Look here (http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/07/21/the_geil_cl_1/page9.html) for the performance differences between the timings…

Video Card: eVGA GeForce 7800GT 256-P2-N516 (+ free Quake 4) – $ 299.00
:(
I just received my 7800 gt today in the mail, and called up evga's customer service.
They've already sent out all the free copies of Quake 4.
:(

And to the original poster – You can usually shop around to get 10-15 off of your DVD burner. Hell, I got mine for 39 from newegg.

Re:This is the system I have in mind… (Given that you're not going to use SLI)

Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ – $ 322.00
Motherboard: EPoX EP-9NPA+Ultra – $ 105.00
Memory: 2x G.SKILL Value 1GB 184-Pin DDR PC3200 – $ 142.00
Video Card: eVGA GeForce 7800GT 256-P2-N516 (+ free Quake 4) – $ 299.00
Sound Card: Integrated
Hard Drive: Seagate Barracuda 7200.8 ST3250823AS 250GB – $ 103.50
DVD Burner: NEC ND-3550A Black – $ 39.75
Monitor: Samsung 940b 19" LCD – $ 335.99
Case: Cooler Master Praetorian PAC-T01-EK Black – $ 108.50
Power Supply: Fortron AX450-PN – $ 49.99
Speakers: Logitech THX Z-5300e 5.1 Speakers – $ 138.99

Total price: $ 1644.72(without shipping, that is…)

Prices are from Newegg… BTW no keyboard and mouse needed…?

The 2GB of slower RAM will be better than 1GB of RAM with lower timings… The Logitech speaker set isn't as good, but not bad either… :) The PSU is better now… The mobo is very good, has a lot of features, and will overclock your X2 a lot…

Within the next year, games like Oblivion (now Quake 4 already) will benefit from the dual cores, and so I think that's a must, even if it performs slightly less now…
