Q: Im running a Win 2k network and need a CD burning application that will work in user mode. I do not want the users administrative rights or access to the register it. Does anyone know of a burning utility that works under Windows 2000 user mode? I tried Nero and Adaptec 4.02, both not working. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

I'm not sure why ASPI won't install – EZCD is certainly a qualifying program.
Maybe you could try installing it manually – either by uninstalling and reinstalling EZCD or by finding the aspiinst.exe file on the EZCD CD.

Re:ok. when i run the program to install the ASPI layer, it says no adaptec software found and aborts. i installed the update 4.02e just fine, and tried to run the ASPI program again, but it still wouldnt work. where do you have adaptec installed? I have it in the program files directory, would it work if i installed it in the root directory?
this is quite frsutrating. at least i'm done for the week and don't have to worry about it till monday.

Perhaps you should check your ASPI layer. Run a search for 'wnaspi32.dll' – it should reside in the C:\WINNT\SYSTEM32 directory (or equivalent).
If your is older than 4.6.0.1021 then perhaps you should update/install a new ASPI layer – this can be obtained from here (ftp://ftp.adaptec.com/software_pc/aspi/aspi32.exe). If you haven't got version 4.02e of EZCD then you might want to get the update (although I doubt that it will solve your problem specifically). Re:i've installed apadtec 4.02 as administrator, and it works fine when logged in as administrator. It doesn't work while logged in as a user tho. any ideas on how to fix this?

Re:You need an ASPI layer installed before non-administrative users can use CD recording software. Without such a driver, there is no method for a program running at user level to access the drive. You need to have administrative access to install such a driver.
Adaptec EZ CD does come with such a driver. EZCD does work from user accounts, but requires administrative access to install.
No other program will work unless you first have an ASPI layer installed – the only one I know of that includes an ASPI layer that works from user mode is Adaptec's EZCD.
Nero doesn't work from user accounts at all.
