need to access IDE HDD . SATA but only on my computer [dell dimension 4700] [dell dimension]

Q: Heres the problem . I told someone I would be able to retrieve all their data from their hard disk after it died. She told me she had a SATA disk . I thought she knew what she was talking about. Figures it has an IDE drive and my 4700 can not read the IDE drives. What is one way I would be able to access this drive to get? Companies should not work like this? Like pay a certain amount of money and they will get what you want from a HDD? Is there a solution to this?

Thanks in advance.

Re:For quick temporary use I have been using the Vantec (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812232002) unit and have had no problems at all. When I need more than temp I use this enclosure (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817153047) what can I say it works. :D

Re:That Coolmax unit should be as good as any – Newegg has dozens of similar units.

This is another option: http://www.newegg.com/Product/…x?Item=N82E16812206002 (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16812206002) (advantage of this is you get full speed of drive while the USB to IDE will get you only about 20MB/sec or so transfer rate).

There is a lot of that type of stuff here: http://www.geeks.com/products.asp?cat=HDD. And as another said, you can get a complete external HDD enclosure for the price of the Coolmax unit.

Re:Is there particular reason why you can't use the built-in IDE connector on your 4700 motherboard? Realizing that you might have two optical drives connected to it already, you could temporarily disconnect one while you retrieve the data from the IDE hard drive.

EDIT: Or are you saying you already tried that and the BIOS simply wouldn't recognize the IDE drive connected via your onboard IDE controller?

Re:Didn't even know such an adapter existed. I was going to suggest a hard drive enclosure – you'll be able to find a bunch @ Newegg. They're pretty easy and you simply connect to USB.
