Networking between Win98 and WinXP [windows xp network setup] [win98 system]

Q: Well, one of the computers on my home network is upgraded to Windows XP. It says to do file sharing, I have a Disk on all non-XP systems running. Got the disk ready (like a floppy that the correction for the UPnP hole recently discovered), but I wonder if I should focus sharing.

The Win98 file system is rock-solid stable (as far as can be Win9x ), and I am very, very reluctant to install updates for the operating system and in the past have shown that the stability upside down on more than one occasion. I attribute this reluctance to why the system is so stable. How does the XP file sharing protocol work on a , and it is common for a computer bonkers after they are installed?

EDIT: My main reason for the file-sharing was to send stuff to the used-to-be non-XP system to burn on CDR, but the will get a new CDRW quickly, so that use is gone.

Re:To share a 2k system with a non-2k system, you need to create an account that matches the logon for the non-2k system and add it to the power users group.

Re:i've found that though the "network places" cant see each other, if you search for the computer by name, you can find it and connect. if youy have the disks shared. maybe try that or am i misunderstanding?
good luck

Re:Have you created a userid on the XP machine that matches your logon to the 98SE machine?

I can't tell you specific stuff, cause I only have XP and 2K networked.

Like was said earlier though, XP is basically 2K and I was able to share between 2K and 98SE fine (the 98SE got upgraded to XP).

Re:I can SEE the XP network through 'network neighborhood' on the Win98 machine, but when I try opening it, it says 'network resource is unavailable' or something. I think Internet Connection Firewall was enabled on the XP machine, I'll try turning it off and seeing what happens.

Re:yes File Sharing is enabled.. but there are no shares on the laptop, I use IPX/SPX and TCP/IP with netbios disabled over TCP/IP
there is nothing really special that I can see to setup, to access shares on windows98se from Windows XP. Windows 2000 you have to have a user account setup and some shares, I expect that windows XP uses the same file sharing system as windows 2000.
Though I haven't figured completely the Windows 2000 file sharing system to access from 98se, I know you create a account on windows 2000 give it a password, and the person on the 98se machine has to be logged in as that user ID then they just simply put in the password and it should work (sometimes it does sometimes it doesn't I don't understand why, it either works or more often says network resource unavailable, though I never have a problem accessing shares from the windows 2000 machine on the Laptop Running XP it just works as it should, I just chock it up to Microsoft's inconsistency's, or my lack of patients)

Re:So do you have file-sharing enabled? And if so, how?

Re:Ive got XP on a Laptop that connects to my network of windows 98se, Windows 2000, and FreeBSD machines. I never bothered with the disks from XP and ignored the Wizard that they put in XP, and just set it up like my 2000 machines, not a problem yet..

It seems when you strip down XP to were its usable for power users, its just a modifyed version of Windows 2000, or it sure looks like it..

Re:Wow. Glad you told me that it FUBAR-ized your brother's machine.

I've tried setting up file sharing normally, but it didn't work. Said something about said network being inaccessible or something.

Re:My brother put that disk in his 98SE machine and it had to be formatted & reinstalled. Never booted again.

What it is supposedly doing I have no idea. Have you tried just setting up sharing normally without the wizard and seeing if it works?
