Q: I know that they are the same, but so far only the audio CD-Rs are taxed more heavily. However, this no longer seems to be the case, at least according to this article (http://firingsquad.gamers.com/news/newsarticle.asp?searchid=2560).

.paldo: nope it pretty much kicks ass even with this. The only issue I have with being canadian is that it can be difficult to find vendors that deal in a lot of the weirder brands.

Re:Everyone has been paying the same fee on blank VCR tapes for over 10 years for the same reason, like I said before it covers the right to copy (within reason) material that is protected by copywirght, for example when you record a sitcom or fotball game to view at a later time. Cd-r's are just now being viewed as a medium that records copywright material more than personal data, thus the fee. I'm with guy, I welcome the fee, it practically gives you a licence to copy any copywright material for later use, as long as you use it for personal use and that you don't profit from it.

If they are going to charge me a tax on blank CDs and pay the artists I'm cool with that. I actually buy most CDs I like because I think the artist deserves to get paid. This just leaves me free to go MP3s I so desire.
Re:Fine with me. It justifies me copying all the music I want. I will never ever ever buy another "real" audio CD. After all…by paying these levies I am compensating the artists and record labels. Now I can copy and not even feel bad about it.
