Q: Hi, just built a new computer
I and when I press the button the fans spin around one second and then stop. I tried closing and re-installing the video card, RAM, CPU fan, CPU, and tried another diet all with no luck. The green LED on the motherboard is on when connected, so that leads me to believe that maybe the CPU, the CPU pins all were good but . when I have the HD pluged it makes half beep if that makes any difference
the specs are: AMD 64 3000 977 503 9775 03CPU ASUS K8N4-E DELUXE
1 GigCORSAIR 3200 DDR
RAIDMAX casing with 420 watts of power supply
SEAGATE 120 Gig Sata drive
Any much help would be appreciated
Best Answer: Did you connect both the 20 pin and the 4 pin connectors to the mother board? Also did you install stand offs behind the mother board? They are little brass bolts with an elongated head and a hole on top for the screw to go into. Screwing the board directly to the back plate will cause it to fry. Also check the PSU voltage setting to ensure it is set to 110V US or 220V if you are in Europe. Do you have an LED on the main board? If you do it should be lit up before you turn on the pc indicating it has power. Otherwise I would say something is plugged in to the wrong spot and you should check all connections.

Re:As guy says, it is very possible for the mobo to be bad and show this symptom – BUT, it may not be that.
DID you try the cpu in a different system yet. and what was the result if you did?
HAVE you cleared CMOS?
HAVE you tried starting the system up WITH EVERYTHING disconnected to power and mobo except – psu/cpu+fan/mobo speaker? If yes, what happens?

No keeping it pressing doesn't do anything unfortunatly =(
I have another question for ya,
If I did short the motherboard somehow with the posts, would it still turn on for a second? and still have a green light?
I've seen bad motherboards power up for a sec and shut down… the led on the board was lit. Do you have your power and reset jumpers mixed? ![]()

Re:Green light represents the 5V standby power being present…
There are also rare circumstances, where the motherboard is not compatible with the PSU and can not jumpstart it correctly (the green line of the PSU connector has to be grounded permanently to keep it running).
Normally the power button gives an impulse and then the mobo keeps the PSU alive. But there are cases, where the timing between mobo and PSU does not work out…
To test this: Does it boot, if you keep the power button pressed? If yes, see issue above…solution: another brand PSU…friend of mine had the exact same prob…

Re:I found out after I initially researched the problem that I had some posts in spots where there were no screws, i later changed it so all the posts were matched the holes on the motherboard. Could this have permanently damaged the motherboard?
What does the green light on the motherboard represent by the way?

try the cpu in a different mobo to verify if it is the cpu or mobo that may be the issue.
Edit:
You have to troubleshoot ruling out each component. You still could have a bad stick of ram in there, but first try doing what guy suggested.

FWIW I had the same symptoms and it was a bad motherboard.
