Q: I installed a new NIC in my laptop. The 3Com drivers installed fine. Installing and then asked for the win 98 disk to a bunch of DLL files to intervene. I no longer drive or have the orig. Cab files on the disk. What can I do to install this NIC?
Re:True, though usually its cached and finds the cabs on its own. I have seen C:\win98 as a cabinet repository as well.
Re:If the OS was pre-installed by an OEM, then you can always try looking in path
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs
Handy Tip:
Whenever I setup a W9x system, I make sure and stash a copy of the installation files from the CD somewhere on the drive. Super-handy for just such an occasion, and well worth the use of 300-400MB.
Re:See what file it needs, then search the web for it… I had the same problem, and was able to do that.
Re:Thats true. Sometime the files you need are in other directories. The system directory for dll's or the windows directory itself for other file extensions. I would disagree with it usually working however. Depends on what your installing. I would say usually you need the cabs but its worth a try if you havent tried looking for the files already.
Re:Sometimes you can point to the System directory in the Windows folder and Windows can find the needed DLLs there. It will not necessairly work, but usually it will.
Re:Find somebody with a Win98 disk and then copy the cabinet files to your HDD. Your hosed unless you can find a disk or someone willing to send you the cab files or the individual files windows is looking for.
