Q: I have Win98SE installed and everything went smoothly until he crashed during random cs and again after reboot i Ive decided to make a night and the next morning refused to boot (BSOD immediately after the desktop every time) I decided to just 0.
upgrade to xp cuz they never gave me any trouble. Thing is a format is absolutely the question.
98se boot disks do not have cdrom support in DOS so I can not install. Im on my XP rig Bros., but the XP boot disks only work on fresh install, I just learnt.
What should I do?
I know WindowsME boot disks have cdrom support in DOS and a friend can give me in four hours, but I would not so long .
thoughts wait? anyone?

Re:Thing is a format is absolutely out of the question. uuummmm, maybe you should also backup your important data.
good luck
Re:well oddly enough this worked out for me (so far… knock on wood!)
ok well i just decided to go for a wildshot and try to boot in 'normal' mode and waddya know… it worked… this happened once before and only for a couple mins so i didnt waste time and installed windows xp straight away!
now im in the process of getting the (many) windows updates and updating drivers…
ps – oh and im posting from my comp!

Re:Get a DOS/Win98 boot disk from www.bootdisk.com (http://www.bootdisk.com).
Re:didnt work.
fsck.
Re:i got a friend to email me the contents of a windowsME boot disk… in the process of copying files to blank floppy and trying to boot my comp off it.
brb.
Re:Note 1:
A lot of people appear to be unaware of the fact that you do NOT need the 4 or 5 setup disks in order to install Windows 2000 and XP. A common Win98 boot disk such as the Boot Disk Essentials diskette below can be used to install these OSes. This is what the Win XP System Setup Disk above does.
Here's how to do it:
Start the computer with your chosen boot disk.
Change to the cdrom drive.
Go into the \i386 directory on the cdrom.
Run WINNT.EXE to begin the install process.

Re:the XP CD should boot right out of the box…you don't need to make a bootable CD. Unless you downloaded it from the net somewhere. In which case, you deserve whatever grief you're getting right now. If not, then I say "huh…thats odd"
Re:ok the cd won't boot and yes its the first from the list. i cant create a bootable xp cd cuz the burner is in the messed up comp and i dont wanna go thru the hassle of opening both rigs up and swapping stuff around.
still nothing. now it froze in safe mode. fantastic.
Re:LOL…I was going to say boot from XP CD,that`s what I did,I don`t know

Re:If it's an official CD, it should be bootable. I'm assuming that you have already checked your BIOS to see that your CD-Rom is first in the boot order (and not behind your hard drive).
they have cdrom support but not for dos. i cant get into my windows.
Maybe it's just me, but I don't get what you're saying… win98 or xp?
Re:I don't know if I fully understand the problem. But like guy said, can you not just boot from your cd rom?
Here's a site that tells how to make your XP CD bootable if you need to:
Bootable XP CD (http://www.windowsxp.nu/bootcd/)
Hope this helpz.

also how can i boot to xp? the boot disk is only for fresh installs (according to ms site)…
Can you boot from your CD-Rom drive? if you can, just stick your XP CD in and boot from that…
