New wireless router may no longer work VPN [intel netstructure] [wireless router]

Q: I just upgraded my Linksys router to a Belkin 802.11 pre-N router (for the range, not really the speed). I installed it properly and even gave the same SSID. For now, Im not with any certainty, and all my computers on the Internet may just fine.

The problem, I VPN into work to use certain programs. It is an VPN program. I enter my info as usual, and it starts to get me to log in, but then it failed. The last thing she does is “requesting client IP and WINS / DNS info” and then I get “Can client does not obtain IP” and it failed.

I not changed any settings so I know the router. I disabled the firewall on the router and it is still a go. I can connect to sites like banks, etc safe, no problems, so its just the VPN thing. My office desk is closed for the weekend (not sure if they would be able to help me), so I ask if any of you gods would give me a point in the right direction.

Thanks!

Best Answer: 1) Power ON Your router.
2) Connect ADSL cable to router ADSL port.
3) Connect PC / laptop via ethernet cable to router ethernet port.
4) Open web browser and go to: 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.0.1, it depends)
5) Write default admin login and password (usually admin/admin, admin/password, admin/passwd – it's always written in product manual).
6) Turn ON DHPC server.
7) Turn ON WiFi.
8) Change name of Your wireless network (SSID).
9) Turn on some security functions (WPA encryption for example, however You should turn ON security when all devices will working).

Make sure that without security you have also only local connection – maybe You configured MAC filter or sth else that won't allow You to go to the 'internet'.

If old one was also linksys You can try to export configuration and import in in new one (from admin configuration) but You should first read if it's compatible.

Re:Just a little update in case anyone else runs into the same issue in the future and does a search. I tried everything above and still no go. Belkin tech support gave me ports to enter for forwarding and that still didn't help. I got an RMA and was about to return it when I found out there is a new firmware online. When using the router to upgrade its firmware it didn't see it because it is a very minor upgrade. Anyway, installed the new firmware and everything is golden without having to open any ports.

Thanks to everyone for their answers.

Re:That's because your new router isn't letting the VPN traffic through. No actually read everyones suggestions and follow some of them. It will fix your problem.

Re:Ok, this is weird. If I connect up via cable to my router then I can get to my VPN, it's only when set up wirelessly. Again, if I connect my old router I don't have a problem wirelessly. What setting could that be?

Re:What type of VPN authentication are you using?

Also…Helpdesk != IT Department. Quality in one area is generally unrelated to quality in another area. Granted, the helpdesk should have an escalation path to an IT/Network Engineer who built the VPN setup, who should be able to troubleshoot this problem.

Re:Did the IP range that your router gives out (DHCP) change? Maybe the new subnet conflicts with the IP that the VPN wants to give?

Re:if your helpdesk can't help, I would start looking for another job. A worthless IT dept can drag an entire company under.

Re:The online version of the router's manual on Belkin's site is pretty much worthless, so I can't give you exact directions, but you need to log in to the router's configuration page and enable VPN pass-through.

To log in to the router (assuming you haven't changed the settings on it), enter http://192.168.2.1 in your browser's address bar and when prompted for a password, leave it blank. (If you have changed the router's password, then use the password that you set.)

Once you are logged in to the router you'll need to look for a setting – usually under Advanced – for VPN pass-through. Enable that setting and you should be able to connect to your office VPN.

Re:Belkin says I need to find out the ports needed and then open them in the router. My work helpdesk has no idea what I am asking about. Can anyone assist from here?

Re:Linksys routers have VPN passthrough enabled by default. Poke around your web configuration and see if you have VPN passthrough.
