Just get a *cough cough* E-machine… at least it comes with a software bunldle and if you ever get more money down the road. Build yourself a better one. >>

He did have a PC before this so unless he was using BIOS to play games and surf the 'Net, then it's logical to assume that he already has the software

If you are willing to go a bit more than the $500 limit, I would sub the ECS motherboard for the EPoX 8KHA+ board, one of the best ones out there. If not, this is still a very good system, and many people have ran the ECS board will good stability. The Lite-On 16x CD-RW is currently out of stock at newegg, call them and ask for ETA for next shipment. Otherwise, along with what you've salvaged, a very fast system.

P.S. Make sure you have at least a 300w or AMD approved power supply.

Re:epox 8kha+ (or whatever its called, sumthin like that): $90
athlon xp 1500+: $105
decent hsf: $20
memory: $60
>30 gigs 7200 rpm hd: $80
radeon 7500: $120
sb live!: $30
52x cdrom: $25
120mm fan: uh… i dunno.. cant be more than $10, right?

did i get everything? so, call it $560 or so with shipping. it really helps to have the monitor already. course, you don't have speakers, either. hmm… tough one. sinfulweeper is right… this system is pretty good.. but… it never hurts to spend a little more.

Re:<< hmm… ive been playing around with the idea of building low-cost (but quality!) pcs for my friends for a little xtra $… the "starvin' student" line never really got off the ground, but i know it's possible to build a quality duron system for <$600. hit up newegg.com.. you can literally get everything from one good online store, its convenient this way and will probably save on shipping. so it depends on what you want to use your computer for and, therefore, on what features youre willing to skimp. in order to hit $500.. you're going to have to get a low-end duron or athlon for <$50, then toss it on a cheap (but quality!) kt133a board, maybe shuttle or something. get crucial memory, of course. now.. what else do you want? like music? want to play some games? spend only on what you need. if all youre gonna do is surf, you can prolly get away with integrated graphics and sound, though i wouldnt. for gaming, get a gf2 mx vid card.. roughly $60, sb live sound, roughly $30. hmm.. the monitor always makes things expensive. you want a good one, but good ones cost a lot. don't try for anything more than a 17inch. i would recommend the hitachi 17 inch they got at newegg for $140.. good monitor, good price. umm.. there are so many things to buy… do you need speakers? those can easily suck money if youre not careful. you dont need to worry bout cd roms.. they are cheap.. oh yeah, hard drives. well, theres a big range of hd sizes and speeds for comparable price, so you should be able to find something you like. man, this turned out to be long… sorry, i've been researching prices and whatnot for a while and it's fun to help someone else out.. good luck to you… >>

He has a point. I make a good chunk of my money building computers for people. However there is no money, in fact it usually costs money to build sub $800 systems. Leave that cheesy hardware sales to OEM's such as Compaq, Dell, gateway or whoever. If you wanna make a 'decent' system, be prepared to fork out usually around $1K.

If you wanna make money building computers, do so on top of the line models. Those large OEM's make their money off of those and so do I. However they make up the loses on those low priced systems by selling the high end ones for more than they are worth.

Re:Sorry guys, i guess i should have elaborated a bit. I will definately be using this for gaming. Besides that i surf listen to music and watch the occasional transformer cartoon. :) I have a cable connection. I already have the following stuff that i salvaged from my failed duron 600@ 1 gig.

Ethernet Card: D-Link DFE530-TX PCI Fast Eternet Adapter
Sound Card: Creative SB PCI512
Floppy Drive
Logitech Cordless Mouse and Keyboard
19 inch ViewSonic A90

I also have a modded mid-sized case with some loud as hell fans. I have a panaflo 80mm i can put in it but i need a quiet 120mm.

So, i guess what i need are a mobo, processer, video card, 7200 RPM HD with over 30 gigs, a CD-RW, CD-ROM, and a quiet 120mm for $300-$500, shipping included.

Would the sound card and network card be ok to use? Is the SB Live a lot better than the one i have?

I think i also have 128 megs of pc100 SDRAM?? But since RAM is so cheap now, i guess i can get better ram as well.

Well, thats a lot more specific. Oh, and i may sound like i know wat im talking about, but i really dont. So please be as specific as possible when referring to products, since i wont know what they are by brand and model number alone.

Thanks for any and all help.

P.S. I would like thhis pc to be as stable as possible after my last duron 600 debacle. :(

Re:Here is a quick suggestion:

Antec SX 630 or 635 ~$60-$80 I'd get the 635
ECS k7S5A mobo ~ $60
256mb PC2100 DDR by Crucial ~$75
Radeon 32mb DDR ~ $45
Plextor 12×10x32x CDRW ~$90
Athlon XP 1500 ~$100
Floppy $10
Keyboard $20
CPU Fan $20-$30

Thats about $500 plus shipping without the monitor.

You can eliminate the burner (and add a cheap CD Drive),drop the RAM to 128MB, and go with a cheaper CPU depending on what your needs/wants are.

For around $140 you can get the MSI K7N420 mobo that had onboard sound, video (good quality), and LAN too. I will be building a box for a friend with it soon I expect.

Good luck, there are many other choices.

Re:Including a monitor?
What will you be using this for? Just basic e-mail and surfing?
Would like to use this for gaming? Listening to music? Will you be using a modem to connect to the internet or do you have broadband and so will need an Ethernet card instead of a modem?

You might want to look over in the Hot Deals forum for cheap parts.
Don't post a thread asking for cheap parts though, requests go in the "I WANNA" thread, as in "I want a…"
