Exactly. Why do sports & racing titles always show the cutscene graphics? Sure they look better but they are seriously misleading.
guy that is definitely not real-time gameplay. Those are the shots they show between plays as filler.
My point is I'm pretty sure that's rendered in-engine, which is what matters.
However, if it's not gameplay, yeah, it could be significantly upped in detail (Halo 2 was VERY guilty of that).

Those most likely are real-time gameplay, but I still think they're decidedly unimpressive for what the next gen consoles have in terms of power…on paper, at least.

= weak. That looks like Unreal Engine 2 with better lighting and some specular maps added to the textures.

Are the next gen consoles capable of better? I'm sure. The lack of :wow: in the Madden shots is not a fault of the hardware, appears more to me to be a case of poor artwork. Everyone knows the next gen consoles have plenty of grunt.
Statement stands – those shots are unimpressive. There's high liklihood it's due to a schlocky art team, but for whatever the reason those shots are at best a marginal improvement over the stuff we already have.
