This software works but it really really really slow. Really really really slow. Slows my new imac to a crawl and the slowest of antivirus scans I’ve ever seen. Just changed over from the PC world and as a creature of habit keep antivirus installed. All the antivirus authors seem to have free trials except Symantec. Probably because you’d be really frustrated and not buy the program… This was the biggest waste of money I’ve spent on software in a long time. Two stars since it probably does it’s job….if it ever finishes the scan. So far six hours on a month old computer.

Update: Well, no longer is it a waste of money. Talked with their very friendly New Delhi tech support and got a refund. Bought Intego and though it’s expensive, it does the job efficiently.

After installing Norton AntiVirus, I had no complaints. I’ve used the Norton line of products with great satisfaction since 1995. But when, for the first time, I needed to get in touch with their customer support department, I might as well have yelled into the sky for benediction for all the “support” I actually received.

It all started when my Mac stopped shutting down properly. It would get hungup, and then just sit there until it eventually hit kernel panic. An unusual problem, but Apple has an excellent facility built in to handle this kind of issue: on restart after a bad shutdown, the machine will allow you to track down the file causing the issue. In this case, a Symantec file. And one Google search later showed it was indeed a Norton AntiVirus file. I e-mail Symantec support, and receive no help. I try uninstalling AntiVirus, but the CD doesn’t have an uninstaller on it. Great. I e-mailed their customer support, but never received a reply.

A phone call later to a gentleman who really did try hard to help, but whose first language obviously isn’t English, and he merely told me to reinstall. Which didn’t work either.

After working in IT, and spending a good deal of time using Norton to resurrect dead disks and kill of virii, it was quite a disappointment to realize how little money Symantec is willing to spend on support (of course, it’s not a big surprise considering they now charge for virus definition updates).

i’d really like to have this installed but it brings my newer-ish MBP w/ 4g to it’s knees. if you’re just browsing the web and reading email you probably won’t notice, but if you stress your system in any way, forget it. file system access times and memory usage went way up.

    well, $50 down to drain.

everything i’ve read says the only reason to have antivirus software on your mac is to avoid passing on email-based viruses to PC users.

an alternative to this is software called “little snitch” that monitors and reports all network usage.

I have only owned this product for a short while so I haven’t experienced any problems. Two years ago my computer ended up with a worm which sent out bogus messages to friends to infect their Windows computers. It was embarrassing and upsetting. I had always bragged that Macs were immune. I purchased a version of Norton Anti-Virus and within a day, the troubles stopped. Since then, I never leave my Mac unprotected. This version seems to be an improvement over other versions and I feel better having it on my computer. I now have Leopard OX so I wanted to make sure the program could protect it.

I purchased this product of the Norton website without realizing that it doesn’t have support for Mac Leopard. I had to call customer service to request a refund and that was a pain in the you know what!! If it doesn’t have support for your OS I wouldn’t even bother. Go to the Norton website and get the info there. If it doesn’t say then either call them or don’t bother. Do research another brand!!!

As a member of a team looking at archiving photos for our churches I looked at several Museum Software packages, even purchased one of the more expensive ones, then I found Musarch. The small price paid to purchase the book to get the premium addition is trivial, and the book will come in handy if I need to convert the database. We needed several features that were not in the release we started with and Jim quickly added them. We are delighted with the product and the support we have received.

I volunteer for a small non-profit museum, serving as the techie for our computer system and electronic communications. We were faced with a large stack (over 10 years worth) of old paper acquisition and inventory forms, and it was nearly impossible to find anything quickly. We started looking around for software to automate the process. We downloaded a trial version of a “name brand” inventory software, and it was great, but at a price tag of over $800, it was way out of our budget range. I went looking online and found Jim Halpin’s freeware Museum Archive software and installed it to compare to the trial version of the expensive program. For the functions that we need in our small-town museum, the Museum Archive program worked just as well and gave us the same basic functionality as the expensive one. I bought the book in order to upgrade to the premium version to be able to get all the available capacity and functions of the program, and to have the book on hand as a reference if needed in the future. The program is great and runs very well on our antiquated computer system with no hitches or glitches. Once you order the book and upgrade to the premium version, you get to keep up with tweaks and mods as soon as they are released, and feedback from the author, when I’ve needed to make contact, has been very quick and helpful. It’s a great program and I’m so glad we found it.

Jim has chosen an unusual way to obtain the full version of his software by requiring the purchase of this book.

While the book is really only targeted at techies, it is a necessary purchase to unlock the full features of his software.

The Musarch software program, while designed as a ‘One Size Fits All’, had enough configurable settings to suit our museum. Without the purchase of the book, you only have a limited set of options in the basic program. Considering Jim would only be getting a small part of the purchase fee as Royalties, he has shown how he puts people before profit.

Including postage to Australia, this enabled us to buy a database package for our museum for around AU$50.00 compared to the AU$1200.00 the museum was originally facing using a commercial program.

We have found the software very easy to understand and use. The program can be copied to a thumbdrive and different staff can work on a particular part of the museum collection at home, then bring it to the museum and import it into the master database.

One of the best features is records cannot be accidentally deleted. To delete a record, you have to go to a separate menu and deliberately delete it. Also, records are not updated ‘On the Fly’ but only when you click Save. If you decide your entry is not correct half way through entering it, your data is discarded if you click Cancel. With a lot of database programs, the data is updated permanently as you type and that can quickly result in chaos and frustration, often meaning you have to restore from your last backup – losing all the entries you have made during your current session.

I highly recommend this program and encourage you to see buying this book as a ‘Means to an End’ and not a book you would actually need to read. The only reason I did not give it 5 stars is because of the software’s generic nature. But for the price, that is not a major issue and can be worked around with a bit of planning before you enter any data.

Thank you for this handy addition to the database software! It complements it perfectly and in my opinion is a must have. Very affordable and an easy read! The included premium version of the software with the additional features is awesome! It has been well worth the wait!
