Q: I am buying this game eventually. I just want to know – this is a game I need to buy now or wait until Christmas the best way to go? Im not talking about Counter Strike Source here . HL2 single player game only. Please no spoilers – just opinions. Thank you.

Re:exactly. MOst of us dont have the time or dont want to put that much time into something like that. I played the beta and found it pretty fun…. but its more fun to play a game that you dont have to commit your life to and pay monthly fees for.

I would have to say that Far Cry > Doom 3 because even though Doom3 looked amazing the gameplay got boring after a few hours and you had a completely linear gameplay that sucked. UT2K4 is awesome but you're right.. it is different and you cant really compare it with these other games though so I dont know where it would sit… seems that almost everyone would say that HL2 is better than Far Cry which to me says a lot. I'll have to pick it up soon.

I actually had UT2K4 ahead of Doom3 when I originally wrote my post. But then I had to ask myself which brought more to the table, and I think it is Doom3.

and yes i own all four. as for which is better… i only list HL2 as first since it's more of a bargain (you get two great games HL2/CSS) and i've played more CS:S then i ever played Far Cry and HL2 added together…
i've also beaten HL2 and i feel that i seriously wanted MORE GAME. but i felt the same way when i beat Far Cry. however when i was playing Doom 3 i just wanted it to end so i could say i beat it

You really can't compare these games, each one offers something a little different. I absolutely loved Far Cry. I got bored half-way through Doom 3, it just got boring. UT04 just wasn't my style of MP game, and I love MP games. As much as Far Cry offered, HL2 just offered more.
Hl2, IMO, is an easy win for GOTY.

That is how I'd rate them. Although, UT2K4 has amazing multiplayer, but it is simply more of the same in the long run. Unreal Tournament has become more of a gradual thing than a revolutionary thing.
Re:HL2 is the best of the lot. UT2k4 is too different really. I must say that UT2k4 does have a lot of hours of enjoyment if you download and play a lot of mods. Still, I like a great FPS single player game. Far Cry is not quite as good as hl2 because it's derivative, and the slow moments drag. Doom 3 was fun for a short while, but became too repetitive.

UT2004 is an online game, and I mostly play Red Orchestra (a mod for it), and not the original game, but the original can be fun too. It's not much for single player.
HL2 gives the best single player of all the games mentioned, and currently UT2004 is the best multiplayer (until mods for HL2 are released beyond CS: Source)

Re:UT2K4 is great fun if you have a fast connection, but there isn't really any solid singleplayer to speak of (just the tournament campaign featured in the other UTs:a string of botmatches with your team). And, it's available on a DVD collector's edition.
I have not played FarCry or Doom 3, so I wont make any judgements. Just to let you know my judgement may be skewed about HL2 not having played these last two.
HL2 is quite easy to get if Steam works for you (and you have broadband): its a 4 gig download, and if you leave your computer on overnight, it should get done by the morning. OTherwise, HL2 comes in 5 CDs. Still, this game (the single player) is really, really good. One of the most 'immersive' games I have ever played, video, audio, the physics, everything.
These games aren't going anywhere, and they're only gonna get cheaper. But I would pick HL2 over anything else, because there's already a huge HL community. So, hopefully, it'll be like the first HL: you get one of the best single-player games ever made, and then you get a slew of modifications, multiplayer and single-player.
I say get HL2 whenever you feel like playing HL2.

I haven't played UT2004. Looks nice, but I'm not a big online gamer. UT always seemed like an online or LAN party type of game to me.
I LOVED FarCry. Awesome game.
Half Life 2 is fun. I think it's equal if not a bit better than FC. Not sure why except that it's HL and certain parts really make the game. Of course you know about the gravity gun. This is an example of the 4 or 5 parts that really make the game special.
I loved FarCry. HL2 is not quite so hard and has a story that takes you all over the place and lots of environments.
