i've come real close to pinpointing it tho.
now after having run all the spyware stuff and AV stuff IN Safe mode, i can open My Computer and control panel and such.

the issue here is NOT that win98 is buggy. besides, it's NOT my machine. so comments regarding win 98 are not to very helpful.

Re:I forget which virus it was, but last fall there was one that changed file associations. Whatever was associated to start executable files was changed to some .vxd. Because it changed the associations, I couldn't even run regedit, or go into view>file types to change them back. I believe I downloaded Stinger virus cleaner and ran it from a floppy. This removed the virus. I then had to reinstall 98 over the top of itself to fix the associations.

Re:Try SpyBot search and destroy. I've seem simular problems like this before on my bosses computer, and it was caused by a buggy IE toolbar that AdAware didn't catch.
