Re:the shh server needs to be istalled at your uncles and configured correctly, then the router at his end needs to forward port 22 to the ssh server.
you will need his ip address

Re:how would i forward the port to the server? Right now i have no idea what my home IP is, and i would need a way to allow my ip into here would i not? also in order to change anything on the router from home, i would need to be able to allow my home IP in and i have no idea what that is. am i correct in saying that right now i will not be able to do anything from home until i learn my IP and tell my uncle what to do?

o you mean if i get a program such as F-secure Ssh Server/client

yes

install the server on one of the boxes on the work lan. open port 22 and forward it to that pc. make sure you enable local and remote forwarding.

the client will log into the server using ssh client (putty, fsecure etc) and setup forwarding rules:
see here
http://people.hmdc.harvard.edu/~mathpre/vnc/putty/

thats for vnc, RDP will be the same except the port is 3389 instead of 5900

you can tunnel almost anything that uses tcp through ssh.

Re:so you mean if i get a program such as F-secure Ssh Server/client

that is how it could work?

lets say money is unlimited, but my knowledge is limited, so something easy, but secure.

and this is just for a home server, but i need to b able to access it incase of problems. (so there are other ways of getting programs too)

depends on the OS.

" the server will be running xp pro."

you can use the built in remote desktop, or vnc, or pc anywahere, etc….

you need to decide on speed and budget.

personally id use the RDP, and push it through an ssh tunnel.
