On-board sound and procedural issues [msi k8n neo2 platinum] [nvidia website]

Q: Hey everybody,

me again hopefully my last “begging for help” post in a while.

System specs: OCZ PC3500
AMD64 3200 winchester
1GB K8N Neo2 EB ram
MSI Platinum
6800GT
Windows XP

Im currently experienceing two separate issues that are really bugging me. The first is that I can not seem to get my sound to work. I tried downloading the latest nForce3 drivers from the nvidia site – nada. dxdiag will not even sound like me to use it. Tried using Real Tech driver from the MSI website, nothign going. dxdiag recognizes a sound card with these drivers but I hear no sound. Maybe this could be better placed on the MSI website?

My second problem is the one really annoying. I bring my brand new PC to my families house in perfect condition (24K 3dmark01, etc.). In less than two days are messed up. I open Counter Strike Source or WOW and I get stutters, my fps drops to 0 if you step back up to 160 after a few seconds. Very annoying when it completley ran smoothly before. I look at my processes in task manager and the announcement of some program called “mainap” which uses 70-99% of my CPU constantly.I end of the process only to have to restart again after a fraction of one second. It should be a kind of virus, but both Norton and PCcillin not see.

If anyone has any ideas how to solve one of these two problems, Id really appreciate any help. I do not mind formatting my computer, but Im not going to do until I figure out what is wrong with my audio. As I said, any help is appreciated, thanks.

Best Answer: Try to disable the onboard soundcard on your motherboard…Turn it off. Ground yourself then take the soundcard out and reinsert it on a different PCI slot. Keep trying until the computer detects it. This should works.

Sometime uninstall / reinstall driver works.

Re:Hey guy,
I think that your board uses Realtek audio and not Nvidia. Check and make sure, but my Neo 1 board uses realtek audio and you should use the Realtek Audio driver thats on MSI's site.

Re:What a great program, thanks for the link. I suspended mainap.exe's operation, now once I figure out how to get it off the application list, I should be able to delete it. Its in the Windows folder by the way.

Re:Thanks for the reply

1: True, which is why I'm asking. However, I'm pretty much stumped so if I can't find out what I need to know, I'll just format.

2: I am, I just hate seeing it running in the bottom right constantly

3: No, I installed norton, uninstalled because it wasn't mine and then installed PC cillin, I've also tried an online anti-virus, panda or something like tha.
4: Checked. Multiple times, also hooked up the speakers to another system and they worked fine. Man I wish that was the problem

5: Will do.

6: Is hijack this part of process explorer or is it prat of adaware or spybot search an destroy?

Re:1. Formatting is not the answer. You will never be able to figure out what your problem(s) is/are and how to avoid them if you format.
2. If you disable automatic updates, you better be diligent about visiting Windows Update weekly.
3. You aren't running NAV and PCillin simultaneously, are you? Make sure you're only running one anti-virus program at a time.
4. Double-check your speaker connection. If your sound card is recognized by dxdiag, make sure that your speakers (or headphones) are connected to the proper jack on your sound card.
5. Download Process Explorer (http://www.sysinternals.com/ntw2k/freeware/procexp.shtml) to determine where your mainap.exe process is stored.
6. Post your HijackThis log so that we can determine if you have any spyware on your system.

Re:yes I have tried Norton and PC cillin for anti-virus, and I've disabled windows update, as it really annoys me. I have checked for security updates, and have downloaded the critical ones. I can't think of anything else besides a format to fix the mainap.exe. Does anyone have any ideas on the sound issue.

thanks.

Re:Do you have anti virus software installed and updated? What about windows updates? Contact MSI on the sound probably.
