Q: In fact, I wonder if there is a way for a partial partition of my hard drive to do so I can test a few things on the clean side. I do not want to have to fdisk / format my C drive, but I hope, like partition of 2 GB of space, so I can test some things, but I do not have to reinstall the OS. A colleague said he thought he came across a tool that allowed for this once. Does anyone know of any?
Re:qtparted will do everything parted can and works with NTFS. The easiest way to get it is with knoppix.
Ranish Partition Manager will also resize partitions, but won't do as wide of range of configurations as partition magic. http://www.ranish.com/part/
Despite those options, I've still bought Partition Magic.
Re:FYI, I've switched from recommending Partition Magic to using Acronis Partition Expert instead.
* it creates a bootable CD instead of floppies, the CD does support XP and NTFS disks
* it works with PCs that have a Windows server OS installed. PM 5-6 (and later?) block themselves from running if a server OS has been installed to any patition (so they can sell you a server PM for $1,000).
* PM 5-6 were buggy. 4 was solid, but I had lockups with both 5 & 6.
Re:I've found Partition Magic to be indispensable – well worth a purchase even if you only think you'll use it once. I thought that but have since used it many, many times now i'm playing with Linux as well as Windows on the same machine

Don't think it handles NTFS though

Re:I normally wouldn't mind biting the bullet on some quality software. But I'm about 90% sure that I will only need to run this utility one time and one time only. If I needed to partition drives on a regular basis, then it would be cost-effective. But I'm just doing a little video driver troubleshooting and need a VERY small section of my hard drive to work with, without formatting.
Re:GNU parted is free. I think you can find on the http://www.sysresccd.org/ .Don't think it handles NTFS though
Re:Partion Magic is worth the money. It makes disc management a breeze.
Re:I don't think freeware exists for this. You'll have to bite the bullet and buy the software.
Re:Okay…Partition Magic is pretty cool BUT the Demo will not allow you to actually create the new partition (from what I could tell). Seems to just let you specify the size, name it and then that's about it.
Re:Was hoping for freeware. Partition Magic is offering a free "demo." Just wondering if it will do what I need because I only need to do this partial partition one time to test some drivers out.
Guess I can use my computer here at work as a guinea pig with the demo.
