Opinions on running servers using a home cable modem / DSL connection [comcast cable modem] [cable modem connection]

Q: Hello all,

I just wanted some opinions from people who may have dealt with this problem or may have some feelings about having to get a Comcast at home it.

I. I recently received a Red Hat Linux 7.2 firewall. I left the SSH daemon is running so I could join the work. I have Apache installed, so it can run as a webserver.

Im a little scared because Ive heard that people lose their cable modem or DSL connection to their ISP servers will find them running it.

I will certainly not with this setup for a company, but I would like a personal website on the web server and SSH server up.

From your experiences to keep, I have to worry?

Thanks.

Best Answer: You want to use as few spliters and split the signal as few number of times as possible before it reaches the modem. Those sound the same, but what I mean is that you don't want to use a lto of splitters, but if you have to use one, don't use a 3 way where a 2 way would do.

I know I had a problem after spliting where the signal became too weak. Here are something I had to do and you should keep in mine when splitting the lines.

First, see if your cable provider recommends any specific splitter. I know I had a cable man come out when I lost my connection and he replaced my spliter with one he said worked better with the cable lines. Something about a frequency range. Usualy its the same kind that came with the cable installation kit, if one even did.

Second, same goes for the cable it self. Try to use the best possible cable you can. Your house is probly already wired with something, so your stuck there, but connectiones between the wall/spliter and the modem should be made with a good cable, not some leftover wire with a homemade end.

Lastly, like I said, don't split more than you have to. For instance, I know in my house the main cable lines comes in and is split with an 8-way and from there goes to the other rooms. To improve signal strength, I removed the cable line from the room in which my cable modem is in. After that, I inserted a 2-way between the main line and the 8-way, and then connected line from that modem to the two way. Thus, instead of having an 1/8 of a signal before it gets to the modem, it now has 1/2. That should allow you enough to put another splitter in so you can have ti go to both a modem and a TV without loosing connection. Anyway, hope that helped

Re:I subscribe to Cox Communication in Tucson and know that they have residential connections and business connections. My advice is to call Comcast and see what they can do for you.

Re:i would pose this question over on Dslreports.com Comcast Forum (http://www.dslreports.com/forum/comcast) seeing that they have comcast, can give you their personal experience in running a server on the comcast service.

Re:You should most definitly check your TOS to see if servers are allowed or not. Many cable companies have port 80 blocked so this could be a problem for webserver. There are ways around this, but a blocked port 80 usually means that the ISP doesn't want servers. :) In this case, I'd advise against running any servers.

Re:Hi:
Well I run a server on my cable connection. I have Charter cable. In the terms of service that they presented to me when I got installed (3months ago) there is nothing about servers. i have become acquanted with some of the tech people there and everyone of them has a home server. When I asked at the local office the persons there had no idea what I was talking about. There are no limits on bandwidth except my modem is capped at 128 768, slow but good enough for several pages and a BBS that gets about 80 hits a day. I personally have not known anyone that has had there service disconnected for server applications.

Re:The best people to ask is your cable provider. They may or may not allow it. It usually has nothing to do with whether you are running a business but because of bandwidth.
