Q: I was wondering how Icould this fix . Once the modem is in use and the ready, the kernel uses 15-25% CPU . all the time. I have sharing enabled if that matters. Ive seen others have problems with this on the net, but I have nothing to do with modems yet.
Why done this with OS Xs?
Thanks
Re:What model Mac do you use and which version of MacOS. If I'm not mistaken, the recent generation Macs use a software based modem so all the DSP functionality is done in the CPU, instead on a dedicated chip on the modem.
Either way, just moving the mouse around in OS X (any version) usually bring the cpu usage up somewhat because Carbon and Cocca is a beast.

Yeah, thanks for pointing it out
BTW Anything else I should read I might have missed?
(I already read the material that came with the iBook)
I can't think of anything off hand. I don't usually read too much of the documentation that comes with this stuff.
When I use my powerbook, I start with it unplugged (unless the battery is already down), and plug it in after a while. I'm not going to worry about "correct use" and stuff too much, but basic knowledge is nice. ![]()

Using the battery is good for it, BTW.
What do you mean?…
Apple's battery page. (http://www.apple.com/batteries/)
There's some interesting information there, and it doesn't really apply to your thread. But I read through it before I got my powerbook. Good stuff to know. ![]()

What's the difference between the two? This isn't a HUGE issue for me, but I will use it now and then, so it's a bit annoying (especially if I was using battery power)
I think it has to do with process handling. If it's in the kernel there's less overhead. I don't know if that's the issue, I don't use dialup anymore. ![]()

Re:I wonder if they're using userland ppp. I know with userland pppoe that's been known to happen, not sure about regular ppp though.
