Q: So I have recently built a Windows XP file server, I have 5 500GB drives in a RAID 5, 1.81TB. So I hook it all up, smoothly smoothly and hook it up to the network. The whole point of the server is a print server and file server for OS X, but also to my boss gave his first “real windows machine. My problem lies in the transfer of files to the system of OSX. I am the Macs connect to the server via Samba, and the transfer speeds are incredibly slow, this is important because we are editing at work and have that speed. What is also strange is the fact that transferring back off of the XP machine is about 4 times as fast literally, (3.1GB transfer takes 11min versus 3.5min) What can the problem be?

Why? You like the fact OSX server gets it's nads handed to it by even NT4 in terms of performance?
Wow, where do you get your performance stats? I've always found Samba to be faster then windows filesharing, especially on the same hardware. But hey, if Bill says so….

Re:I have looked everywhere on the net. I have tried using the terminal in OSX, with no avail. I have found someone with the exact same problem as me HERE (http://forum.osx86project.org/lofiversion/index.php/t20004.html). It is nearly an IDENTICAL situation. I need to run windows because of print drivers… running 6 printers (3 R200s for CD labels, R220, Brother Label Printer, Epson 4800 with Colorburst software) I have no idea what to do. ARGGG!!! Also, I need to have this running so that a complete PC noob can keep it running while I am at college.
Re:You might want to check macosxhints.com for Samba speed issues. There are a few configuration options that may help, but I don't remember them off the top of my head.
Re:How slow is it? How much faster is it with a Windows to Windows transfer?
Re:my first stab would be to use a real os for your file server…
tbh, I would rather use OSX for a file server then WinXP, but that's just because I can install and configure samba from the CLI like I'm comfortable with.
