Q: Is rootkit protection, or anyother cause a drive no longer read discs?

I had a HP Disc Writer CD52 that over time increasingly recognized music and data discs over time.

That drive is set as a master on my MOBOs Secondary Channel.

I that station moved to the slave position on the secondary channel and added a CD-ROM drive in the Master position. I think it worked a little better after that. However, over time, the CD52 CD-RW Drive does not recognize any disk

I set up a fileserver for my house, which will be mainly for MP3s, but there will be some other files on there as well. I will be using a Pentium II 266 with 96MB RAM for the system. I have Windows 2000 Server Setup and runs well on that system, so my question is, should I use Win2000 Server for this, or should I use some Linux distribution? If Windows, what should be setup? Q: I have Win98SE and XP installed in dual boot. Win98 is on C: and XP on D:. I want to install Linux on E: and I want a boot menu where I could choose between these three operating systems. All partizions, FAT32 and I dont want to change tha, because I want all partitions w / all OSes.

You access should also know that I am a Linux n00b. I especially nred Linux to learn, because Ive needed for uni.
