PC switch, switch. Tried everything!

Q: My PC turns on, then a few seconds off. So I bought a new CPU, new 400W power pack and plugged in, only the motherboard, CPU, RAM and power, to test it. Still does the same. Before it can initialize VGA, switches off, so I cannot tell what is wrong. I thought it would be the power (not enough), so I bought a juicy new power pack, along with my new cpu. What the hell is wrong?

I took my motherboard with CPU and RAM back to a shop where I had tested, and I saw it work with my own eyes! Then I got it home with the advice to check if my button was stuck in, and it wasnt, so bought a new battery. No change.

Gigabyte KVML motherboard
AMD Athlon XP 1700
384mb DDR
400W Ram Dual Fan PSU

Any suggestions?

Best Answer: Perhaps it is overheating:

You may need to clean all the vents especially the fan vents with an air duster (can of compressed air).

It is possible that your fan(s) has failed or is running slow – might need replacing.

For a laptop make sure you operate it on a solid surface so that air can freely circulate around it.

If we are talking about a desktop, switch off, unplug and clean inside as well. Do this outside of the building because you will be surprised how much dust & dirt has accumulated.

i have tried everything guys, i only have a:

RAM
MOTHERBOARD – - – - + 400w PSU (Brand New)
CPU(Brand New)
FAN(Tried different Fans)

I turn it in with a screwdriver on the 2 jumpers, so no power switch problems.
Motherboard works with an Athlon 1ghz
Used to work with my CPU, but not anymore.
Seen it working in a shop.
I cant take the whole thing to the shop cos they will charge me the same amount it will cost to replace the whole lot!
(and thats just per hour!!!)

Okay then, what about the voltage in your wall outlet? How much is it?
(Remember, if U R @ or near the end of the line, there is a drop, or if the powerline in your local area is at the same time connected to a big industry.

I once lived on the same power line as a local Beer Brewery (called ′Albani′ – nice beers!)
and @ almost repeated time intervals my machine would shut off and/or restart….
I then checked the powerline, and @ those intervals (ca. every 8th hour) the voltage dropped as much as 50v~!!
(Remeber, DK is on 230v~)

Re:Also check your owners book and see what is the highest CPU it will accept

pull one memory card out – reduce it if you have more than one

when you boot up press DELET continusaly untill it goes to bios settings and make sure your CPU settings match your CPU

If your Bios CPU settings dont match the size of your CPU it will do that as well = on – off

for $ 3-5 MaX You could mail me the MOBO CPU & Memory and I will check it out for you also you need to include a Return shipping Right now it would take about 2 – 3 weeks befor I can check it out for you
There is no charge I am on disability and it would be wrong aginst God and government to work under the table
I have alot of work and love helping others out All you have is my word as I am new to this forum

Re:Well actualy you have not tryed every thing

To my kwnolage and that aint saying alot When your system shuts down shortly after you start it

there are a few things it could be

You need to give full spects MOBO HD CPU OS LOL it does help when others know excatly what you have

1 and most probable VIRUS there are several Realy nasty very very hard to get rid of Viruse out there that do just what your system is doing even worse if its in the bios or graphic memory
2 Your heat sensor is outta wack ( replace it – or – snip it ) use an external { digital doc 5 for example }
3 Unplug the Fans from the mobo and reset your cosmo then go into your bios and readjust your settings
but dont play in there if you dont have a clue best take it to a qualified person and have them show you so you can do it ya self next time
4 make sure your Power on & restart are on the right pins and correctly

Do you have a Cam if so maybe we can hook up and MSN You can point your cam to your system ect.. and I can watch what you are doing Then help make adjustments if needed

you would need cam – MSN messenger – mic so we can talk LOL

I will need your
Name and address
blood sample
just incase you fry your self I can contact your next of kin and hospital in case there is a chance you might make it .
also to send the bill I charge $230.00 an hour Hey I gotta make a living too No Charge I just like helping others

Re:Hm did you try it in a different wall socket?

Re:Check for a short or damage on any cables…… some power supplies supply power for a brief amount of time before cutting out if a short circuit occurs.

Re:You could see if not having the power switch hooked up helps. Unhook it from the motherboard, and then use a small screw driver or something that has a small metal end, and touch the two power switch pins. If it fires up ok then you know it's the switch.

What guy says about a overheat problem is a possibility.

Re:It could be that your case's power button is internally stuck in the "pushed" position. The motherboard sees the power button seemingly being held down, and says "oh, he wants me to shut down again, got it."

Also, if you have bad thermal transfer from the CPU core to the heatsink (such as if you put your heatsink on backwards, very common) then boards with emergency shutdown circuitry will see the CPU saying "I'm overheating, shut down NOW." and will cut power as if the cord were pulled out of the wall.

Re:Reset the BIOS with the jumper on the motherboard.

Re:Well – take the whole machine to the shop then :D

Re:nothing is plugged in, just the ram, cpu, fan and monitor into the onboard vga.

it doesnt matter what i plug in, it doesnt work for me, but it worked in the shop when i had it tested.

Re:Try unhooking all peripherals, harddrives, etc and boot to a floppy- DOS (if you have one). If that works, start putting back PC cards one by one and see what happens after each one.

You have onboard video or a videocard? If the later, try changing videocards.
