Re:Yeah, I was surprised about the repair as well. They claim to have repaired the northbridge controller last time around. The video card is an ASUS so thats why they asked me to send it along. I bought them both from Monarch Computers.
At least the board worked before I sent it to them last time (except for LAN/1394 ports), this time it wont even boot or enter BIOS. Hard to say though whether it's the video card or mobo causing that. The only thing I can say with any certainty is that the last two months have been hell and I seriously regret this whole expensive nightmare. Hell, I built this rig for Half-Life 2 which is still in the freakin box!
Ah well, rotten luck cant hold out for too much longer, something is bound to go right sooner or later…..
Re:I like the way DFI boards look.
Getting back to your post. I'm surprised that after the 2nd RMA they just didn't replace it. My experiences with companies have been if it takes their tech more than an afternoon to fix the problem, they call and send you a brand spankin' new mobo/vidcard/or whatever it is that you're RMA'ing. If you got the guts, 'demand' a replacement.
I personally never feel safe when I send a product back and get the same thing stamped 'repaired'. I can't see them actually working out the kinks on the board. Maybe they just plugged it in and got it to work and so sent it right back. However, I don't work for them and I don't know what they do, that's just my insecurity.
Also, did you purhcase your Video card from them as well? I didn't think they would ask you to send something you didn't purchase from them as well.
In my opinion if you want the best NF4 board out there, get the DFI. Anandtech posted a review of it today and claim it to be outstanding. The MSI though if you like the looks more than the OC performance, is also a good selection. You honestly can't go wrong with either choice.
good luck!
Re:Well, ASUS is sending Fed Ex over today to pick up my mobo and video card for further testing. With any luck they'll be replacing one of them. My first two RMA's went to Kentucky, this one is going to KYLE at their Fremont California location. Any major differences difference between the two locations? Just curious….
If the third RMA of this mobo doesn't do the trick I'm gonna surrender in defeat and jump off the ASUS boat (or a cliff, depending on my mood at the time).
Between MSI and DFI who makes the better NF4 option? My guess would be DFI but my god those things are f'n ugly.
Re:Got an old PCI card laying around….
Re:No can do…it's a PCIe card and my other rig is AGP. I suppose I could take it to a shop for testing but I'm pretty sure they'll want $50 or so for the time….
