Q: What is the best encryption software for Windows XP, which is easy to use? I would prefer that the program is to use a master password and also I want to be able to file the encrypted email. Thanks:) ——————

Re:((( encrypted virtual disk are like files that open and get assigned a drive letter, there very fast, you can also back them up on CD/DVD or email them )))
Two recomendations for creating fast virtual disks.
1. BestCrypt 7x is great
2. SafeBoot Vdisk 2.00 is also great
For whole partition encryption
1. SafeBoot Solo ( it's the most reliable and used at work on laptops. )

That's why I mentioned only allowing your machine to boot off of the hard drive, not the cdrom or floppy, and to password the BIOS. Then have trained gorillas around to make sure no one can get to the computer to reset the BIOS or anything else like that. And maybe a bomb shelter to protect the gorillas from people with guns.
You can only do so much and still be able to get work done.
PGP is known good software. I've never heard of the other software mentioned here, so I personally wouldn't trust it much. But search google to see if there is any good information on it.
Personally, I don't worry about it as much on a desktop machine, but use a encrypted disk software built into my OS when I have a laptop for documents and whatnot, and of course swap.
Re:What do you think of DriveCrypt Plus Pack (http://www.securstar.com/products_drivecryptpp.php?XCARTSESSID=efb40ce561c2 2d9ba0abc009693bb8ba)?
Some of its features:
- Full Disk Encryption (Encrypts parts or 100% of your HardDisk including the operating System)
- Pre-Boot authentication (BEFORE the machines boots, a password is requested to decrypt the disk and start your machine)
- Strong 256bit AES encryption
- USB-Token authentication at pre-boot level

Use pgp. desktop 8.0.3
It does everthing you need. It also has the ability to create virtual encrypted drives. I have a pgp "drive"
right now that is 20 G b in size.
You mean it will encrypt my whole HD? BTW, how easy is it to use the PGP Desktop? Is it a matter of right clicking a file and selecting 'encrypt file' like in XP Pro or is it more complicated than that?
Thanks ![]()

Re:I don't know how extensively it's been tested, but I use Cryptainer LE (http://cypherix.com/prods.htm) as an informal way to secure documents with personal info, a master password list, etc. I believe the containers generated are pretty secure if you buy the PE version, but a keylogger could expose your password, so there's still a certain amount of caution required.
Here's (http://www.securityfaqs.com/windowsntfocus/6C00O006AU.html) some info on a security flaw it has, though. Not sure if it still exists, as the article is over a year old. Anyway, it's not a huge deal if you just close down the vault when you're done using it. I'll probably buy Cryptainer PE soon. LE is free.
I don't believe this is the best security you can have, but it's reasonably secure and probably the most convenient.
Edit:
By default, the vault size is 20 MB(in LE). This is probably not convenient to e-mail, but you can change the sizes around(20 MB or less in LE, 2 gigs or less in PE, I think).

FYI there's no encryption utility in XP Home edition.
You didn't specify. It sounds like a good reason to get Pro to me.
Anyway, encrypting certain files is useless if you lose your PC because the Windows logon password is useless: http://www.experts-exchange.com/Operating_Systems/WinXP/Q_20348448.html
I don't have a login for that site, so I'm not sure what you are trying to get at.
The PC leaves too many trails e.g. images you have viewed,
You mean the name of the file in the Documents section of the start menu?
credit card and password information you have entered
??
and files you used and are interested in.
Again, recent documents?
It would be nice if there's a way to secure the Windows logon. Any advice or tips appreciated.
Use a strong password.
Both PGP and GPG should be able to do what you want, BTW. And GPG is free.
EDIT: I think I got more of it after thinking about it and reading the cross post. Use pgp/gpg. Keep the encryption key on a USB memory stick, NOT on the hard drive. Use a GOOD password for the key. Back up the key and put it in an anonymous safety deposit box. Using PGP/GPG with a good passphrase should keep most parents, government officials, and spies out of your documents for a while, especially if they don't have access to your encryption key.

If you want to encrypt/sign emails you can use pgp or gpg. They can also encrypt files, I think.
