Q: What is the easiest way to do this?
Comp has a 20GB ATA disk. I know that DOS will only 2.1GB FAT16 as C. No problem there to see. Windows 9x/XP will balance on FAT32. If I load DOS 6.22 first, then install Win98, then install XP Pro to get the bootloader to the OS selection? Its been a long time since I had to do this. I finally got a nice P3 ISA system of junk parts fitted so that my wife and I can play vintage games. XP will be loaded on, so we use MS Office box in case we want to work without having to go down as this will be located in the bow stateroom.
Cheers!
Re:but the simple list is that it does not have many of the necessary utillities. Well, at least necessary to me.
You are aware that the C:\WINDOWS\COMMAND directory contains most of the DOS utilities, and The rest of them are on your Windows 95/98 CD in the \OTHER\OLDMSDOS directory. You can just copy them to a directory on your HD (and add them to the utilities in \command into a folder C:\DOS for instance)

Doesn't DOS 7 install with Windows 9x? I thought the only real difference between DOS 6 and 7 was long filename support? Maybe I'm wrong, but seems I remember playing those older games on my Win98 rig with no other DOS installed. Its been a while so I might be remembering wrong:)
NO! There is a huge diffence between DOS 7 and 6.22. Trust me on this!
I will not go into the long list of differences, but the simple list is that it does not have many of the necessary utillities. Well, at least necessary to me.
You may find the utilities you want in the tools\oldmsdos folder on the 98 cd.
Re:I've always used Partition Magic to create multiple primary partitions (3 are allowed + 1 logical partition for D: – on) then Boot Magic to choose which to unhide and make C: at boot.
DOS7 from W98 might be good enough though, it also supports FAT32 which makes the partitioning a bit easier.
Finally, if you make at least one logical partition FAT16 (say D: ) then you could just install W98 and XP, and use a DOS6 boot disk plus the D: FAT16 drive for any games that won't run under DOS7. (ed) with this you don't need Boot Magic.
Re:Just curious, what utilities do you use?
I was suprised when I found that mode worked in dos 7.

Re:In windows 98, you can press f8 at boot time, and select command prompt only. I've never found a program that can't run with the command prompt only. This isn't the same as the option "reboot to dos" in the shutdown screen.
Sometimes it can be hard to press F8 right after chosing an OS from a boot loader. If you use XOSL (http://www.ranish.com/part/xosl.htm), it will let you queue up keystrokes, so you could make a windows 98 that just boots to the gui, or you can have dos which presses f8 and then 6 (or whatever the command prompt option is). You can do the same in system commander, but that's not free.
The advantage of windows 98 and XP only is that you don't have to do any tricks with hiding partitions. XOSL can hide partitions, though, so if you really want to use dos 6.22, you don't have to buy a boot loader.

Save yourself all the pain and aggrivation and get System Commander or another multi boot utility. Bang.
That is an excellent suggestion. I use Bootstar myself. What I like about using a bootmanager is you can hide the other OS and set it up so the OS you are using always ends up as C:\. The other advantage is if you mess the OS that is actually installed on C:\ you won't loss all the others too.

Re:In windows 98 you can create a custom PIF and have it reboot into MSDos mode and start the game when you run the shortcut. You can set it up to load himem.sys and emm386 for that program or game. You can also have it restart your pc when you exit the game and reboot into windows again. It's all in the properties for the shortcut. If you install 98 first and then XP, XP will install a bootloader so you can pick your poison on bootup. Just remember if you us NTFS for XP windows 98 won't be able to see it. It will show up as a non dos partition. XP can however see and access a fat32 partition and NTFS.

load xp first, its made to support multi-partition boots.
you can edit its boot.ini file in notepad
NO.
Load XP last.
You can put DOS anywhere. Have a partition for Win98, and install it, place DOS inside a directory in that partition to access. When in 98 put the XP cd in, and make sure you check all the options because somewhere there is an option for allowing you to choose which partition/drive you wish to install to, you will need to enable this option

Re:Ranish partition manager/bootloader (http://come.to/ranish)
It's free and will enable you to boot off other partitions and/or hard drives.
