probably something very simple [network articles] [port switch]

Q: unfortunately I am very clueless about networks. Ive read numerous articles and the network FAQ, but no help.

I have a Win98SE box here, and a WinNT box, I want to connect, and share Internet, files and printers.
The 98SE needs the host, the DSL connection via an internal network and another nic go through a 5 to the NT box. I think the hardware setup is disabled right.

First, setting up the NT box seems the easiest, but Im not sure. I have an IP address 192.168.0.1, right? 255.255.255.0 too, and used as a workgroup MSHOME. MSHOME was used as part of a failed network wizard, so I let it equal on both comps.
Im not sure what to install NT to get to work, it may seem ok, but maybe just can not see anything from the 98 comp.

On the 98, I have ICS, tcpip, and NetBEUI installed. tcpip on the NIC is set to automatically obtain IP address and uses DHCP. Nothing in gateway, dns and I turned, but not much except in the name of the host computer.

Setting seems everywhere I look are adopted, they go into great detail on how the comp to do, but always in 98, not NT.

Best Answer: If you want the most recent start date for each account, try

select acct_num, max(start_dt)
from ci_acct
group by acct_num;

Re:It's been a long time since I've used the Win98 ICS so I don't remember exactly how it works. But with the ICS in W2K you want to set the NIC attached to your DSL to DHCP. Then, once you try to share you Internet connnection, the setup program will set the NIC attached to your LAN to a static IP, something like "192.168.0.1". Then any clients on your LAN set their IP to DHCP and the ICS box assigns them an IP number.

Re:You would set your NIC with the DSL connected to DHCP only if you get a dynamic IP from your ISP. However, the NIC serving the internet to your network has to use the IP 192.168.0.1 if you want to use ICS. I'd bet ya your year's salary on it. ;)

Re:thanks, that should probably do it for the password. How do you configure it manually?

I was told that the 98, as host need to use DHCP. Is what guy said setting it up manually? I'll try to do it when I get back to the comp, probably monday. If I take it off DHCP, is there anything else that needs to change, so I don't lose anything? The two nics in the 98 box make rebooting a pain.

Re:192.168.0.1 needs to be assigned to the 98 box if it is going to be the host. Use 192.168.0.1 as the gateway address on the NT box.

Re:On the NT box you should go into Administrative Tools>User Accounts and enable the "guest" account so the Win98 box can get to the NT shares.

The ICS in 98se always was a little buggy for me. Is that your only option for ICS?

If the setup disk won't work you can try and configure the NT box manually.

Re:thanks for all the help so far…

I figured out the service pack 6 said it was installed, but really wasn't properly. I can get both comps to see eachother, but the NT seems passworded. The normal NT password doesn't work when transferring files, and I didn't put any new passwords in. No password doesn't work either.

The only other problem is that ICS does not seem to work. I use the ICS disk in NT, and it says there is no network adapter installed, but there obviously is since I just transfer service pack 6 over it.
I'm using bell sympatico high speed, if it makes a difference, I heard there were problems with it, but I thought they have been fixed.

Re:I've finally got the 98 computer to show up on the NT, but I can't get NT to show up on 98. I can't share the printers, something about not saving settings, and file sharing isn't anywhere to be found. The help files crash in NT so I can't use them. I haven't tried ICS yet, should be working.
