Problem with Direct X 8 on Win 98SE – how to fix? [direct x 7] [direct x 8]

Q: Some thing that I installed auto-installed – now the sound stutters. Is there a simple solution to thhis problem – or a simple way to return to the previous version of ?

I watched programs / install Direct X and not to see included (I think Windows 95 allows you to install / uninstall). Im mainly a unix guy so hum – and whatever.

Machine Specifications: Celeron 400, Windows 98 SE, basic sound blaster (I think PCI 64 or 128). The driver for the Sound Blaster are listed as 1999 (ms initiator). I checked creative website and their latest driver dated 1999.

Ho hum – suggestions – I dread having to reinstall everything (stupid record means everything to be re-installed, not only os – right?)

Re:Download DX8.1 here. (http://download.microsoft.com/download/win98/Install/8.1/W98Me/EN-US/DX81eng.exe)
Also go here (http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com) too for other misc updates.

Re:You prob already tried this, but have you reinstalled over the install? This just happened to me yesterday. Upgraded a prog, then when I went to run it, it said was miss a .dll file. I just installed the install over itself and everything was fine. Go figure, but sometimes that's all it takes.

Re:Try running DXDIAG.EXE, which should be located here:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\DXDIAG.EXE

Follow the prompts, and you might be able to pinpoint a conflict or something.

Re:No no — as I said in the oringal post — some software I installed loaded 8 (it is 8.0). It wasn't downloaded – er the package was on cd-rom. This is a pain. I hate ms.

Re:8.0 can't be uninstalled
you could try redownloadind and reinstalling if you d/l the drivers you might have lost some packets which could cause problems
but 8.1 did fix the problems i had in 8.0

hope this helps

Re:Hum — how do i tell exactly which version is installed ? I tried looking under system profile and install/uninstall. If it is 8.0 maybe I need ot upgrade to 8.1?
