Q: I have a problem with a 40GB Western Digital I bought a while back. The drive is ATA100 and my motherboard (ASUS A7V) has two IDE connectors (primary / secondary) and two ATA100 connectors (primary / secondary) and came up with a 80connector ATA100 cable. when my hard disk to the motherboard and go to the movies, it never finds the drive. I tried the disc on the ATA100 connectors and the IDE connectors and the ribbon cable and a 80connector 40connector ribbon cable. My CD drive is on the secondary IDE with the mobo itself and will always, never, but my hard drive to find, wherever it is. Any ideas? (And yes, the jumpers on the hard drive right set). Any info would be appreciated. Thank you.
Re:I had the exact same problem with my A7V and WD400BB. If you are running a single drive configuration, you need to remove the jumper from the drive in order for the A7V to detect it as ATA100.

Re:Use the 80 cable, and there is no harm in connecting a non-ATA 100 drive to the ATA 100 controller.

Re:That's correct, if you are attaching the drive to one of the ATA 100 IDE channels, the BIOS won't see the drive. When you are booting up the computer, you should see a screen which appears right after your PCI IRQ configuration which says "Promise Ultra ATA 100 controller detecting drives". This is where you'll see your new hard drive displayed.
Re:When connected to the 100 controller BIOS will NOT see it, that part is normal. But, if you are connecting to the Primary Standard IDE controller and still not able to see your drive, that could be a problem. Is the Primary controller enabled? Have you tried connecting any other drives to either controller?
