Q: Ok I have a new IBM Deskstar 60gxp, and I have a problem. Sometimes when I try to install a large program from a CD, in case point is Quake 3 Arena, it copies about 10% of the stuff, then a dialog box appears. But before I can read the dialog, my system restarts itself. Once this was done with a few programs I have it again, and after the possibility of a few programs to install from CD, I still can not install q3a. I think the cable, or I have to go to the IBM Deskstar tools available. I bought the OEM HDD, and didnt come with cables or a disc. Is there a difference between a 80 pin cable and a ATA/100 ATA/66 cable? Anyone know where I can find some tools away, because the one I found on the IBM site didnt have anything to the ATA settings to check. If anyone has suggestions, just let me know.
my system:
abit kt7a
tbird 1.2 @ 1.33 (but I tested this problem on 1.2 and did the same thing) 977 503 256 megs PC133 generic sdram
Elsa Gladiac ultra
sony 48x cdrom
IBM 20 gig Deskstar 60GXP
load of fans (who I disconnected and tested again, in case that was a power thing)

Re:ok here's an update: i'm an idiot. I forgot to install the 686b fix from via. I reinstalled the new via 4-in-1's and used the fix, and everything seems to be cherry for now. thanks to everyone who tried to help me.
I never had anything like this happen before I got a 7200 rpm HDD, think it could be possible that the 686b/sblive problems only occur in UDMA hdd's?

Re:Now I am having even more problems than before. Explorer errors have occured frequently just recently, 3dmark2001 crashes, and i still can't install stuff from cd without crashing. I turned down all of my memory settings to see if that would do anything, and I was able to run 3dmark through, with very crappy scores i might add, but the other problems persist. Anyone have any ideas?

Re:ok correction to the above message, there is a SIGNIFICANT decrease in performance. 76 mbps read speed with udma enabled, and 15 mbps with it disabled. I think I'll keep it enabled, but I guess I'll just have to disable it to install large stuff. Man that ticks me off.

Re:yea I would, but I've heard it has problems with gaming. But I will give it a try, soon enough.
well disabling the UDMA mode in the bios apparently fixed the problem, and I got no performance drop according to the HD Tach.

Re:well, this is no good. when I disable UDMA in the bios for the cd-rom, it still reboots itself, but when i disable it for both devices, it works. I'm running 'doze 98 by the way.

Re:(Just a little Rant)
Most everyday consumers look for the cd-rom #'s
48x, 52x, etc.
I've made the mistake of buying some cheaper
drives that didn't work too well. They "lose track"
on a cd & you hear them "spin down" & back up again.
After doing this a few times, "Explorer" can lock up waiting on the drive.
Or the "BSOD" appears.
I think the older 12x/16x are actually more dependable,
unless you buy one of the really good brand name faster drives.

Re:OK
How're they going to make a screen-shot if
the machine "reboots" itself?
Sometimes I have problems with the actual
cd-rom drive. I've had installations that "BSOD"'d
and finally had to plug in a spare cd-rom drive
to complete the installation. I haven't had it reboot though.
Can you install the cd-rom on a different connector?
Rearrange the devices?
Maybe the CD-rom isn't DMA capable?

have a look here (http://www.storage.ibm.com/techsup/hddtech/welcome.htm) for IBM Feature Tool which will allow ata switch.

no!
