Question about Ad-Aware SE Personal [microsoft antispyware] [pronsites]

Q: Im just curious as to what really is a “critical object”. I scan my computer once a week and I always find somewhere between 28-34 critical objects. But my other software such as , Spybot, and AntiVir do not come when I scan.Is because Adware is a better and deeper scanner or something wrong . These critical items cookies, viruses, spyware, adware or . wut? Given I use the Internet every day, but many are not like Im going to use a or p2p crap program. Is the professional version, just like this?

Edit: I use WinXP Pro SP2, the firewall and Im using CCleaner to clean the registry and history also.Other once a week that Im too lazy to delete history every day.

Re:For people not as experienced with spyware troubleshooting I suggest using the online version of X-Cleaner, which runs through active x controls at this website:

http://www.spywareguide.com/onlinescan.php

Anything that pops up and asks you to remove it, just click "Remove It!". There are no normal programs that will be damaged by removing objects (except if you use Gator for password management, in which case it provide instructions on how to migrate your passwords over).

Re:are there anything i have to be careful with when using xclean?

Re:So wut i'm getting out of this is some of the critical stuff are like cookies? If thats the case i'm not worried.

Re:files identified are usually just cookies (no worries)

anything else is potentially bad

the thing about ad-aware is that it doesn't detect activeX stuff which is the main source of a lot of spyware

Re:If you use IE, set the Privacy slider to Medium-High and you should see fewer tracking cookies. If you use FireFox/Mozilla, try setting Cookies to "from originating website only" (I think that's what they call it). Also consider using SpywareBlaster (http://www.javacoolsoftware.com) if tracking cookies bug you.

Re:Ad-aware generally detects cookies, regkeys, etc as critical files when they aren't really "critical". Generally, browsing the internet for a few hours will put most of these critical objects back onto your harddrive, so you will detect them every time if you scan once a week, or even once a day. There are ways of browsing through, after the scan has finished, to see what each object is and identify what the actual problems it causes are.

At my tech support job we run the following things in order to remove spyware:
HijackThis, Spybot, Ad-aware, X-Cleaner, CWShredder, and a few other specific removal tools. I suggest trying to run these if you are still having problems, especially X-Cleaner as it removes a lot of troubling spyware that other programs usually have a hard time detecting.

Hope this helps.

Ad-Aware's detection rate is decent, and if you click on the critical objects tab in the scanning results pane you'll see what has been detected. :)

Spy Sweeper and Spyware Doctor offer the best detection and removal IMHO.

i tried a trial version of spyware doctor and i like spysweeper better
(more tools and options)
