Q: Hi guys, Im looking for my Opteron 165 overclocking to about 2.5G so I will do something around 270Mhz needed. Any good 2G kit out there that will do this? Thanks guys. Im really a noob at this. Im looking to spend about $ 250.
Best Answer: There are motherboards now that will support both DDR2 & DDR3 so if you get one of these even if DDR2 does finally become unavailable you will be able to replace with DDR3

i think you got it wrong. that's htt multuiplier not memory divider and yes you should keep tht arond 1000mhz or less. memory divider is basically memory speed. it should say something like auto, 266mhz,300mhz, 333mhz, 366mhz, 400mhz or somehnig like auto, 1:1, 5:4, 3:2, 2:1

This thread answers any question you'll have about getting started with A64 overclocking. (http://www.i4memory.com/showthread.php?t=327) Note that there is a program listed which can help you calculate which memory divider you should use. Note that there are separate discussions on testing the limits of HTT, HT, CPU, RAM, etc.
Assuming you have a 144 (not sure why you dont' list your ENTIRE system specs), then the 133mhz RAM setting will keep you under 200mhz for use with pc3200. The 166mhz setting would keep you under 230mhz, the 200mhz RAM setting would keep you under 280mhz etc. Again, read thru the link I've provided, it explains everything.

Re:Well, there obviously should be lower dividers on your bios which should allow you to run even lower ram clocks. In your example, a 3:4 divider would allow you to run 278 FSB with your ram at 222. etc. etc. And also, from what I've read, you should keep the HT around or under 1000, so keep the HTT multiplier at 3x.

Re:oh i finally get it. so that's the mem divider. so i set HTT to 333 x 3 HTT multiplier = 1000mhz which corresponds to my cpu FSB. So it becomes 6:5 divider which is 1.2. So if I i set my memory @ 270mhz divide by 1.2 then I only run my RAM @ 225mhz. NICE!!! So now I have a couple more questions. What happens if I set the HTT multiplier @ 4x instead of 3x? 4 x 333 = 1332mhz hmm… What happen if i do that? Hmm…let me just give you guys a more concrete example:
I want my Opty to run @ 2.5 so i need 278mhz x 9 = 2502
278 / 1.2(that's 6:5 divider) = 231.6 . Let say my RAM can't handle this 231.6 setting… Is there any other way to achieve 2.5G without relaxing the timing or rediculously up the voltage to get it to run @ 231? Thank you so much you guys. I understand a lot more about OC-ing now thanks you guys.
Re:In my ASUS board's BIOS it's the "Max Memclock." You would just set it to 333MHz instead of the normal 400MHz.

Re:By using mem dividers, you won't need to be able to run 270mhz to get 2.5ghz, unless you want to run 1:1 for some reason. But, my 2×1g G.Skill Extreme DDR500 will do 270mhz at stock timings.
