Rant: ever tried to find a 90nm A64 * * 3500? (Or an XT800 or a 6800GT . etc.)? [price hike] [pcie]

Q: There is only one supplier that sells a 90nm part, Monarch computer.

They are sold out, I pre-ordered.

The irony: We had AMD price cuts, mmmm-kay?

But . as these CPUs are (obviously) extremely rare and because of demand, the prices are jacked up ($ 289 – $ 315 now) – the so-called price into a .

I am so sick of the extreme shortage of hardware (eg . * some * 90nm AMD CPUs) and any card or ATI card . X800/6800 so on . when you look around at the usual places and see their prices jacked up .

What gopings on? Companies announce “to introduce new products . and these products have nowhere to find.

Btw. Recent pricecut for AMD seems only the old parts 130nm . influence

Re:Well, at least it's not just a pure paper launch like in the past. I'm imagining that the chips are going to OEM builders (I think that's what they're called ie DELL) first.

Re:Here in Canada even the 100 to 150 dollar range is limited these days. Its like they cleared the decks for the new stuff and it never arrived and as a result prices are actually higher than a few months ago. At least higher than I remember them. Also can't even get a 9600pro anymore, which was one of the better value cards. Cpu's are a different story, lots of the mid range stuff.

Re:Video card manufacturers actually make most of their money from the 100-150$ dollar range due to the sheer volume of sales at that level. Absurdly expensive parts like the x800 and fastest processors are more for marketing purposes than to meet the miniscule demand for such overpriced crap.

Re:Guess it'll mean I won't have to upgrade as much. :frown:

Re:Agreed.

Not only is it intensely frustrating, but I imagine if this trend continues, the market will become jaded. In the end, I believe that these companies will lose some of the marketing momentum they now enjoy, as people will tend to greet these announcements with an increasing degree of mistrust and/or complacency.

Personally, I've had about all the hype/delayed availability that I can stomach. Unfortunately, I'm in the middle of aquiring components for a new system and I really have no choice but to wait. I'd love to tell ATI to kiss my ass, but in the end I'll just continue to do what they expect me to: wait (albeit impaitently) for that XT PE.

Is this some kind of new marketing strategy or just piss-poor business practice?
