Recommendations for a building to a friend [cing] [music photos]

Q: Hey everyone,

A friend of mine contracted me to build him a new installation, his laptop is now 3 + years old and can not handle his game that he would like play.

He s a very light gamer, plays about 2 hours of WoW a day, but not much else. He wants a computer he can play music / photos / whatever and not worry about it here it.

So my goal is to save the stability, he will not be O / at all, none of his components.

I along a platform at Newegg, and was wondering if you could give me some feedback about it.

I have “already one case and a PSU (500W) for, items from a previous build that never left. He will not need new mouse / keyboard / monitor, but I think I remembered everything.

I asked to socket 939 vs AM2, and he said that by the time he upgrades his next CPU, itl time to build a brand new comp, so he talks off.

Anway 3-4 years, here is the rig , let me know what you think!

Re:Sorry guy and guy,

I also second the choice of 1 gig of RAM and should have written:

1 GB Memory – 2 x VIKING 512MB 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 667 (PC2 5300) System Memory – Retail (2 x53.99 @ Newegg)

I recommend the Intel board because of the quality, stability, and ease of set up, plus the 3 Year Warranty from Intel. However it's a mATX board and has 2 DDR2 slots only… the board also comes with on-board gfx, LAN, and 5.1 Audio. No overclocking features.

Will cost you $146 more vs your wishlist rig.

Re:Regarding the recommendation of a 7300…7300s are garbage.

Re:I'd go 1 gig of ram over a faster processor…wow sees a HUGE difference when you jump from 512 to 1 gig

Re:I would strongly recommend a dual-core CPU. If you want to save $$ you can consider the following:

Intel Pentium D Processor 915 Presler

This is a 65 nanometer Pentium D and power consumption is less compared to previous generation Pentium D procs.

Won't comment on 939 setup difficulty or stability since I haven't used one; experience with Intel platforms (OCed and stock) have been very good.

Re:zeeon, will the 939 be that much more difficult to set up or unstable? I figured if he didn't O/C and had well enough airflow in the case there wouldn't be much issue with that on a 939 system.

Guatama, he'll be using some 2.1 speakers he already has, so no issues with onboard sound.

Re:I wouldn't settle for anything less than a 7600gs.

Single core amd should be fine for him.

What about speakers/soundcard?

Re:Thanks guys, link is fixed. He's really not looking for any sort of upgrade path at all, but I'll also price him out a system with a C2D and see what he thinks.

I was thinking a 7600GT just in case he gets some games that he wants to play that are more taxing then the ones he plays now, but will a 7300 fit the bill? I was under the impression they weren't very powerful at all, more for HTPCs and such.

I'll take out the cooler and just go with the retail one, but now that the link's fixed, what do you all think?

Re:IF you are talking about a serious budget rig, go with a 939. If you can shell out a little bit more go with an Intel Core 2 Duo for sure.

AM2 is just not worth the extra $ over the 939.

I'd forget about a sound card.

But I would get a light video card, maybe a Nvidia 7300

and for now 1 Gig of Ram

Re:If you build for a friend, you are tech support for the life of that machine (and maybe longer?).

BTW, the rig link's broken. You should go AM2 or C2D instead of 939 so there is an upgrade path. Also, if you're not overclocking, there's no point in getting an aftermarket CPU cooler.

EDIT: Check the prices between 939 and AM2 and see what the difference is. If it's not too much, maybe that price will be worth it to him for an upgrade path.
